    Bass or Quality?

who is using their system for loudness(bass) and who is using theirs for quality? what is your setup? speakers, amp, crossovers, subs?

im in need of replacing my speakers and my goal is to go for quality. i do not have the slightest for what speakers i want to run in my blazer. it takes 4x6's in the dash, and 6.5's in the doors. my amp i am running is a jenson 840w 4 chnl.

components are too pricey for me right now. i was thinking of using either some infinity's, rockford's, or some eclpise.

for my sub, i want to use that new pioneer shallow mount. it will work perfectly for the space i am dealing with. i believe my sig has a picture of where i want to put one. its in the tapped off section.

then i want to use some 3" speaker behind my lilliput for my center channel. i just need to find an amp that is small enough to drive that single speaker on that channel. like a 50w amp.

and a separate one for my sub of course.

that is my plan for what i want to upgrade to. i believe it will be clear when its up loud. that one sub isnt going to be mad bassy. it will sound decent inside of a blazer, so i dont need all that crazy high stuff to prove that my bass can get me a bigger ticket. and im not trying to win IASCA.

well.. .your first mistake is putting a center chan in. if you want clean sound you want to reduce and control the point sources of sound. you'll get some weird cancelations and lobing if you add that center chan speaker.

my suggestion is to go with components (you can get low end focals for $200), drop the center chan and the amp for it and put it towards your front speakers. also, leave out the dash speakers. if you have the ability to crossover with your soundcard then you could also take that amp and use it to run an active setup. you could get some dayton rs180's and maybe a seas neo tweeter (or dayton tweeter... or north creek if you have the space...or various others) that'll cost you under 150 bucks and you'll have a great set of component speakers that you can tune for your individual car/truck.

Right now I'm running mostly for sound quality. I have 2 12" subs, but play them mostly at lower volumes to supplement the sound, rather than dominate it.

In the past, I listened to mostly rap and some metal. Therefore, I always got big subs and big amps, and didn't care much about the actual SQL. As I've aged my preference has definitely evolved into a much higher SQL requirement.

Right now I'm running Infinity 5000cs components (5.25") in the front of my Regal with the drivers in the door and the tweeters on the a-pillars and running -3db from the Infinity x-overs. I'm running Power Acoustik 6.5" drivers in the back deck for rear fill. Also, I just tonight decided to go active with Kx drivers and my SB Live card. So all my amps are on full range now. My 4-channel amp is a Visonik HC 1000watt amp. It runs my Infinity components and my 2 12" Pioneer subwoofers. I also have a Lightning Audio 2-channel amp running my rear deck. Will most likely be upgrading to better amps this summer geared more for SQL than the high current like I have now. Still sounds great as is, just want more.

All my EQ's are set to flat. My gains are set properly and I'm not using any +/-db settings on any of the amps. Also the only signal processing I'm doing is my 4th order crossovers via the DSP with the Kx drivers. Currently have the comps set at 50Hz and the rears quite a bit higher, I think around 150Hz. The subs are set at 100Hz. I will be altering this tomorrow when I have a chance for fine tuning. Can't do it tonight as it's 4:30am and I live in an apartment complex.

I'm really looking forward to tuning in active as I've only done passive in the past. Kx drivers are were it's at for sound routing and DSP as far as I'm concerned. In the near future I'll most likely grab an Audigy 2 and get some better SNR and THD out of my source sound.

you have 5.25" speakers x-overed at 50 hz? That seems very optimistic. Also eq's aren't meant to be flat. You really should get a db meter and take some measurements. and i have a feeling that your comps will benefit from a higher x-over point.

    Bass AND Quality

How about both bass and quality!

The setup in my 2001 camaro is going to be:
    -JL 500/1 matched up to a 10"W7
-JL 300/4 runnin the 4 corners 6.5" C5 series speakers
-JL 4" CXi Series for the rear speakers
-JL 4" CXi Series for the center channel

-All getting signal from a Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme Audio sound card

Thats 6 speakers, a center channel, and a sub... and if I did my math correctly that means:
7.1 surround sound durring my automotive movies

Who said that you couldnt have the best of both worlds

i am running the audigy 2 nx. i have mine set a 4 channel right now. but i want to eventually set it up for the 7.1 that it can do. i do have 4 front speakers. which i feel is odd. but whatever. it works out for what i want to do with my system. i of course will need some other amps. 1 for the front 2 speakers in the dash, 1 for the 2 front speakers in the dash and for the 2 speakers in the back doors. and then 1 for the sub, and 1 for the center channel.

but like the guy further up was saying, it might be kind of pointless. but with the nx 2 software, you can adjust each channel. so maybe i could correct the problem he mentioned. i am very stubborn, so im going to try it my way first anyways.

    2 X Tru Technology T4.65's bridged for 200W X 2 into Pioneer TS-C720PRS (review: http://www.caraudiomag.com/testrepor...prs/index.html)

Single 10" Aurasound NS10-513-4A sub bridged off a Alpine MRP-F550...quality, not quantity!

2 X 4" Boston Acoustics S45's wired mono, series off one channel of the MRP-F550...

All thru a Auzentech Xplosion 7.1 sound card with Burr Brown OPA2134PA OpAmps, running AudioMulch for DSP (delay, phase, EQ, Ambiophonics)

Using hand-built Ven Haus speakerwire for the Pioneers...

About the best SQ I can afford right now...

one question... why the 4" speakers? are they in the rear? seems like those are the week point of your system

Yea, as I said, I just went active and really didn't know what to set things at. I did some research and found that my 5.25" comps go down to 67Hz on the low end. Should I set my x-over at this? Or set it higher to compensate for the curve?

Also, about the EQ, I really don't like messing with an EQ too much. Seems most people just jack their EQ's up so bad that it makes everything sound muddy and generally not so great. For tuning an EQ what would you suggest? How much variation should I have (+/- dbs). Also, I always thought it was best to leave the EQ flat because when music is produced they do all the EQ work at the studio. Let me know what you think because I'd love to hear more.
