    Big audio

I've been looking into running a carputer for a while now and I'm still taking precautionary steps to make sure I get it done right the first time. Today I've been thinking about how I want to lay out my speakers and what not. It'll be a mess but hopefully I'll be able to make it as nice as I can. I'll try to post a basic pic that I had made in paint. Well gotta go home. I'll read more and update tomorrow.

you have way too many speakers, i'd drop the 6x9's and the rear components. maybe add a set of coaxials in the rear but you can get away with only using them when you have passengers in the car. next either drop the woofers in the door or use the 8" as a dedicated midrange in a 3 way setup... if you go with an 8" in the door make sure you spend a lot of time and money on dampening the door so it'll get the most from those drivers. Look into a good quality 3 way set up with 8" woofers (i.e. dynaudio) you could get away with going active as well and saving a grip load of cash. If this were my car i'd look into a 6-7" component for the fronts, a single 12 or pair of 10's in the rear and coaxials (maybe) in the rear. keep it simple and you'll have a lot better sound quality. actually if you want to hear my exact setup in my s40 it's being built with a vifa tweeter, a 6.5" phaze mid and a 12" tc sounds woofer. no rears and powered by a single 5 chan amp. this isn't over the top by any stretch of the imagination but it should deliver great sound.

I was going to have so many speakers because it is a large vehicle and if I could I'd be running two seperate sections of speakers essentially. That way if I want to turn off the rear cause someone is sleeping back there then I can just run the fronts or if there's someone in the back watching a movie and someone in front listening to music I'd like to be able to do that. I had the eq in there for seperation and clarity and amplification. I'd like to have a really nice all aroud system that fills the entire vehicle and has nice surround so if I'm watching a movie in the back (I want to have a 20" flat screen for rear passengers) then I can have surround sound. I was thinking about hooking those rear mids up as fronts and the 6x9s as rear speakers so if I'm at the drive in then I will get good sound (at the drive in the best way to lay and watch is out the back). Maybe I'll just put large components in the front to take the place of the 8s and mids and run the tweeters still as is. 10s the same (maybe switch to 12s) and keep the rear mids so the rear passengers will have something other than just base.

Anything I missed? Thanks for the input!

i stick by my original post. keep it simple, the fewer speakers you have the better it'll sound... not necessarily 'louder' but better.
what kind of car/suv is this?

there is a such thing as too many speakers. just one example: It's much easier for a novice to get better sound with fewer speakers then vise versa. do you not agree? if you do you are agreeing that there is a such thing as too many speakers. if you don't agree with me... well then you're wrong :-)

of course for a novice this is true but we where all novices at one point thats why hes asking us about it
my recommendation would be componet systems for the surround and then a matching speaker for a center if he has the room and if he REALLY wants the surround sound 5.1 effect

but there really is no such thing as to many speakers, BUT the more speakers the more difficult the install, the more, amps, power, PLANING you will need to get it perfect, a sound card with controlled outs would also be where you should start

dont crush the guys dreams, we just got to figure out the EXACT goal and then we help him build a product to suit his needs, better speakers can often replace the "more" speakers and result in better sound

more speakers would also localize the sweetspot too. i'm not trying to crush his dreams but rather get him the best sound for his money and skillset. Hell, i'm still sticking with a two way active set up with sub. i'm more for simple yet good sound. I respect your attitude and post, just being involved in a lot of 'grand plans' on this or other sites, i've come to realize that the best advice is the simple advice

x2 with Scott. The fewest speakers to get the volume you desire is best/ most simple. Unless you want to disregard SQ... Then run as many as you want! I only say this because I get tempted to use more speakers at times but keeping things simple really is key. Just install fewer, then see how you like it, if your not happy with the output, re-evaluate.
