I'd say the problem is where you got the power, or more likely where you earthed it.

Common mistake it to earth to the illumination sense wire from the dash, as it reads (on a multimeter) like an earth when lights are off.

Rewire correctly and check appropriate fuses.

You are using your illumination wire as your ground wire...you are lucky, usually it blows your tail light fuse...


you need to undo the wire that you think is your ground and just get a good chasis ground...
