    Mp3 via CD Stacker Interface

Hey folks. I've been interested in carputers for a while now, but have never gotten around to actually starting a project.

I've recently become annoyed enough with burnt cds rapidly becoming unusable to consider it with my current car - however I'm going to be getting rid of it in a year or so, so I don't want to do anything too extensive. I also like the head unit that's in the car already, so I'm not too keen on just buying one that has a front USB input.

So what I'm wondering is if it's possible to use the head unit's CD stacker input/output to control a simple mp3 computer? I would need to somehow decode the control outputs and ensure that the audio input is correct, but is it even possible? My car has a clarion head unit from a few years ago (the car is a '00 subaru outback), but the "cd stacker" button doesn't even do anything currently - I'm guessing that it needs to have a stacker connected to even activate this mode.

Has anyone attempted this before? Or should I just wait 'till I get my next car and build a proper system in that one? I'd be more willing to go the whole hog and have things like gps, wifi, etc as well as music.

    Anyway, thanks for your help.

I have 2 different vehicles with cd changer interfaces that allow an external audio source via RCA inputs. The head unit will not control the source but will simulate a cd changer and allow disc 1 track 1 playback (this will be your audio source). Your head unit then controls volume, bass, treble, balance, fade. Of course, the carpc also does part of that and will allow a little extra control. The front end I use has a volume control that looks at vehicle speed and raises and lowers volume to my settings.

The interface I have will work with any audio source that can output to RCA so if you're wanting to just use an mp3 player, it should work. It just won't be controlled by the head unit.
