Question Poor radio reception in 99 Volvo V70 w/Pioneer HU

I just installed a Pioneer double DIN HU in place of my stock Volvo radio. The AM & FM reception is poor. There are 2 antenna leads, one has the standard size Motorola plug and the other is a bit smaller. I believe this was a diversity tuning setup as I have 2 in-glass antennas, one on each side of the cargo area in my 1999 V70 XC wagon. Is there an adapter that will combine both leads into one standard Motorola plug I can plug into the back of the Pioneer? Or can I solder the smaller cable into the larger one? The stock radio had pretty darn good reception but the sound quality of the radio sucked (the CD wasn't bad, though). Or is there an aftermarket antenna solution that would work? THANKS!!
