Unhappy Is there a good head unit for USB drives yet?

I have been looking around for a decent head unit that will work well with my Cowon D2 MP3 player. Obviously the main requirement is USB support. I went to a stereo shop recently and had high hopes for the Alpine w404 and x305, but I've heard about some significant flaws with these units that have made me reconsider. Apparently the "MIX" mode only recognizes the first 150-200 tracks on your player. This may seem like a minor issue, but I use the shuffle mode on my player about 90% of the time. So to me it is a significant flaw. Other than that, the Alpine interface works very well for my needs.

I have found several problems from various other HU manufacturers that are so far keeping me from purchasing anything. Many units have a very low limitation for the number of files you can have on the drive. Most units lack the ability to search using artists, albums, and genres. I don't think I'm asking too much when I simply want a head unit which can duplicate the control features that my player already has. But so far I haven't found anything that can get it all right. For now I'm resigned to just keeping the stock HU and using the AUX jack.

If there is a HU out there that has good SQ and USB support, I'd love to hear about it. Otherwise, well, I guess I just needed to vent my frustration. Maybe somebody will release a decent one in the near future.

It's called a CarPC. And they have won SQ competitions and obviously have full USB support.

It's what we do on this site.

most people dont carry any more than 200 songs on a flash drive-and that is what the companies are after-- if you really want that, either get a carputer, or get a ipod and a ipod compatible headunit.

Thanks. Maybe this is exactly what I need. It would be cool to be able to plug my car diagnostics cable directly into a carPC.

You'd be able to keep diagnostics connected all the time. Along with internet and tons of other features. The Car PC is the best route to go hands down. It will require alot of research and learning, but thats what we are here for if you need guidance.

just realize that there is no car computer that is as maintenance free as a stereo headunit. i suggest you look for threads with titles about 'being done with car pcs' before jumping into a computer to find out at least some of the problems you will have.

i know all of this sounds really negative, but i have alot of friends that, after i installed my carputer, suddenly wanted me to install one for them too. most of them got really turned off to the idea though after i told them that i spent the last 1-3 months setting it up...

I definitely recommend the ipod compatible head unit, I just installed a pioneer avh-p3100dvd and it works awesome, fully control of ipod from the head unit. it supposedly has great control of usb function too but I havent really played with that since I just use the ipod
