but did you check the gain setting on your amp?
he is using the factory amp, so this should not be an issue--though if it was a aftermarket amp, it would be a good thing to check.

yep. that's an issue that could be solved with an aftermarket amp, but with an 8 speaker sound system, I'd have to buy (2) 4 channel amps, and I have no idea what the wattage on my speakers is.

typically, a small 4 channel, 50-75 watt max amp should be enough to power the factory speakers-- just make sure that each speaker has a acceptable crossover.

with 2 tweeters, 4 mids, and 2 subs, would I be able to run (2) 4-channel amps? Or should I run (1) 4-channel for the mids and (2) 2-channel amps, 1 for tweeters, 1 for subs?

I dont think I have enough outputs for all that...

if youre using vista or later, there is a good chance windows installed an option with your sound card to limit its output... by default this gets sets to ON, and if you turn it off it will allow full output and much louder sound.

yet another reason for me to hate anyhting after xp(my first reason is not allowing boot screen changes in win 7)

for a install like that, you would typically use one 4 channel for the mids, and then a 2 channel for the tweeters, and either one 2 channel amp, or two 1 channel, high power amps for the subs. it would be neccesary though, to find out the specs for the subs before buying any amps for them--the other speakers should be able take a 22watt rms(50watt max) amp fine.

its actually a feature. vista revamped the entire audio stack for windows, and even with basic onboard sound you can now have features only found on high end home theater receivers. the limited output is just the same as what you find on ipod's, its very simple to turn it off, and while youre in that menu you can take a look at other audio enhancements too.

its most likely your hardware then, it just doesnt have a strong output. most newer motherboards nowadays preout a level that is stronger then most cd players, radios or whatever....

Did the output go down when you switched to to the carpc from the stock/aftermarket headunit?
