no sound to rear speakers / how to fade?

so I have a new asus motherboard and I am using the onboard sound utilizing 6.1 with no center speaker hooked up.

if I go thru the audio utility to "test" the sound I get a test tone from all speakers both front, rear and sub. I can adjust the levels via the audio utility etc... all seems great.

but.... when I play music via winamp or windows media player all it plays is my front speakers. does not output anything to my rear speakers or sub.

what is the trick to get these players to realize I have front / rear / sub and not just front speakers?

    thanks in advance!

It does, I found the issue. I needed to check the box that enables "speaker fill"

So 1 problem down, many to go
