JL 10w1 VS JL 10w3 - Big Difference?

Right now I have a JL Audio 10inch 10w1v2 subwoofer, powered by a Alpine MRP-M500 amp.

To me, it sounds great. But there are a few "bass notes" in certain songs that do not hit like I feel they should. For instance, there is a certain song with three repeating bass notes, kinda like a high media and low tone. The first two tones dont hit very hard, and the last low sound makes the JL 10w1 sound fantastic.

I'm thinking about upgrading to the next jump up in the JL audio line, which would be the JL Audio 10w3v3. However I'm not really sure what the difference is between the two subs? I'm assuming I'll get a wider sound spectrum, but since this is all my first setup, I'm a little lost

So my question is, is there a big difference between the two subwoofers? JL Audio 10w1 and JL Audio 10w3?

    Thanks alot in advance.

while i have never heard a w1 sub(i have heard 10-w3, 10-w6, 10 and 13-w7's), i kind of doubt anyone else will post here, so i will post my own experience:

i started out with some 10" kicker comps--very basic(kickers version of the w1). i upgraded to some kicker 10" cvr's(lets say they compare to the w3--for now). the bass is definitely louder, and punchier, but it still lacks certain notes that i would prefer to have just
    as audible as others.

i blame my box-- the box is technically too small-- even for the comps, so it could be that it will not allow the subs to perform to their best-- the audio shop that i bought them from told me that they build all boxes for kicker subs to double whatever kicker recommends, so by that standard, my box is almost 3/4 of what it should be.. but this is about the only box that will fit in my convertible...

to summarize, you might need to try different box designs, or try moving the sub around in the trunk-- sometimes, a certain location will provide less bass then another location.

also, the car audio shops near me have always been more then willing to let me demo subs in my own car-- as long as they have one in a box (they let me demo that boston acoustics oval sub last time--and it is almost as loud as a w7 -- even with my 600 watt sony amp), so it might be worth talking to your local jl dealer to see if they will let you hear a difference.

    thank you for your reply.

i would love too listen to another sub in my car, but my work schedule just doesn't allow it. my free time really only comes at night time.

i have been told that a box makes all the difference, so i swapped with a buddy that had a sealed box butmuch much smaller. and i just didn't hear any difference . i guess ill try a ported box and see if that helps. butwould a different box produce higher bass tones out of the sub?

Well, I went with the same size box I've had, except ported- and what a difference!

I cant believe that going with a ported box actually produced higher notes from the subwoofer... It did exactly what I was trying to do.

I've noticed that I get a much harder and louder LOW bass hit with the sealed box, but a much wider range with less volume with the ported box. But with the single 10" its hard to complain there.

Thanks for the advice and the information. I am now completely satisfied with my sub

did you try turning up the crossover point? also if the box may be too big, you can add styrofoam or wood blocks to suit.
