Car PC from android phone idea

I am in the midst of two things; looking for a new phone and looking into after market car stereos. I was looking to get a nice double din HU but started reading about Car Pcs. Then I saw the new Motorola Atrix phone (http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US...la-ATRIX-US-EN)
You can buy a netbook-esque attachment which got me thinking about potentially using your phone to run your system. It would probably need a custom wiring harness (maybe not--most phones are using mini-usb). I am not a tech (only a dreamer) so this may not be a realistic option but since my phone is ALWAYS in my pocket, I was hoping this may be a nice solution.

Plus, smartphones come with GPS, web browsing, etc. I'm not sure if there would be a way to integrate blutooth with the stereo (easily).

Anyhow, you guys who know more than me, let me know if this is (or will soon become) another option.

Even without monitoring your vehicle, Froyo's Car Mode kicks the crap out of anything iOS can do in a car.

I don't currently have a CarPC, I just ask a lot of questions.

whats77: Thanks for the link. The tablet in the headrest looks nuts. didn't see anyone using it as a substitute to a hu though.

Matneyx: I'd like to have a nice double din sized touch screen in the car. Since most phones have hdmi out (or something similar) could I plug my phone into the screen? could I then use the phone nav/music/bluetooth? How could I rig it to work through the stereo?

also, I don't really want to have to buy another android device (I'm already getting a phone and was hoping it would be universal)

Read this thread. I'm about to, and it sounds like someone else is, as well.

Tasker app: how to turn any Android Tablet into a CarPC without rooting?!

Honestly, I don't know. If you do have HDMI out, it would pass video and audio to whatever unit you put in (and then you'd have to run audio from that to your amps/deck), but I doubt there is a way to pass touch information back to the phone.

Agreed, but you may be able to use a RDP client that will allow you to control the phone via the PC. Check out "droid VNC Server" on the market (it's free) and see if that will be of any help.

I've used VNC Droid Server to control my phone (DroidX) from Centrafuse. There's even a version of the VNC client that embeds pretty well and will orient the screen properly. My thought after a week or two....spend $29 and get a car dock. It all works, but I'm not sure it really brings any real value to the experience. maybe a better way to put that is that we're not "quite" there yet.

At this point, I've pretty much decided to run w/a Tablet and forgo the use of a PC altogether.
