    Audio AUX port from 8 pin connector? Or from CD? pic inside

    Hi there
    My car is a Saab 9-5 MY2002, and has the base CD/radio (no cassette) unit that doesn´t come with an aux port:

    "Yellow" connector is the antenna.
    "Blue square" connectors are exactly the same of those in the AS2 and AS3 units.

    "Red" 8 pin connector is free, an seems to be for the CD changer (factory option).

    I am installing a carputer but need an AUX port for the sound. I´m willing to move the stock radio to the trunk to keep the steering wheel controlls.

    How could I get an aux port with decent sound quality?

    Steering wheel controlls in my Saab have 6 diff functions, if I get a new aftermarket radio with an aux port and get an interface, will these 6 functions all work?
    Will it be "stock" looking?

    Well, if there isn't a button to switch to the AUX input, or a source selector you can point to the AUX, a cable won't work for you.

    If you can activate the AUX input, you probably just need to solder some wires to that plug (use trial and error to find the correct pins)

    If you cannot activate it, the Headunit expects to get some communication going with a CD changer to enable the input.

    On some headunits, you can buy AUX input cables that emulate a CD-changer, hence the display on the radio reads CD-changer, but it's an AUX input.

    If you buy an aftermarket deck, yes you can buy a Metra(Axxess) or Pac interface system for the steering wheel controls. The system simply allows you to program the buttons to the corresponding function on the cd player. However, it is not like volume up has to be volume up on the steering wheel with the interface. You can have the volume up function be activated by lets say the next track steering wheel button. Don't think you would want to do this, but it helps to know for those that may have handsfree (phone) buttons on their steering wheels that would not be used for that said same function once you put in the aftermarket deck. They could be programed to control probably the source button function for example on the aftermarket cd player. I've had good experiences with Pac interfaces, which have semi-specific units depending on the brand of aftermarket unit, but it can be a bit challenging to understand how to program it. I've heard the Metra/Axxess universal ones work better and easier to program, but I have never tried that one.

    the blue connector should be for a cd changer input-- you might be able to locate a adapter to plug into that.

    1º Getting an AUX port from CD changer. There are 4 CD changer cables in the headunit:

    The main problem is that I would be feeding an unbalanced source into a balanced input (CD changer input on the head unit).
    Could I get stock/factory sound quality this way?

    I would really want to retain the stock look of the steering wheel. How does the interface work with the stock buttons, with cables or is it bluetooth?

    I wonder how the steering wheel stock buttons/ controlls will work with the carputer too!

    Where does it say that the inputs are balanced ?

    I would guess that the left and right - input is tied together insinde the Headunit, so try connecting them together with your signal ground and see if it works - you won't break anything by trying.

    The interface for the steering wheel controls is hooked up to the data wire for the steering wheel controls besides the regular ground and power which does not hook up to the steering wheel buttons. If you want u'r steering wheel controls to work with the pc then look into the carpc joycon interface instead.

    The stock headunit works with the stock cd changer perfectly so both are deff sound balanced. But if I swap the cd changer for a carputer just connected to the old cd changer inputs/cables (using an adapter if needed), you think it may be directly recognised by the headunit?

    I´d want them all to work with the radio as they´re working now, and for the pc at least to be able to shut it down and turn it on. For me it would be more important to retain the stock look of the steering wheel buttons. If the interface works with cables, I can´t get them hidden around the stock buttons.

    Um it doesn't connect directly onto the steering wheel buttons. There are wires coming out under the dash for it. Usually the interfaces tell you where to find it.

    lots to discuss!!

    carpc joycon: this would allow 'some' steering wheel buttons to work with the car pc. but you need to know your way around the car to use it. for the joycon to work, each button needs to send a different resistance when pressed-- you map that resistance level to a certain feature. if you car uses any sort of ecu bus, or converts the button presses to a digital signal, the joycon will not work without modifying buttons/wiring in the car. there is a good chance you could get everything looking stock, ut i would expect it to take a lot of work.


    cd changer:
    many times, you will not be able to just connect a audio signal to the cd changer input, and get it to work. all radios sense the presence of a cd either by certain wires getting connected/shorted, or a resistor across certain wires, or they use a digital circuit so the cd changer can talk to the radio..

    the shorted wires, and resistor values are ok to work with-- not easy, but not too hard if you locate the correct schematics.. but digital circuits are way above my head..

    as for the 'balanced audio':

    analog audio in the car is pretty much standardized. i don't think that you will have any problems with this aspect of it.



    cd changer-, take 2:
    you said that you have the cd changer already?
    if you do, this can make it easier-- all you need to do is to determine which wires are the audio signal, build a small circuit to switch to a different signal, with a switch to control weather you listen to the cd changer, or the aux source, and your done...

    the radio display would still show the cd track info, but the aux input would play through the speakers.. it's not perfect, but it would work.
