    Questions about Realtek HD Audio.

I am shopping for 2 new motherboards. I decided to go with MSI 880GM-E43 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard, which comes with 7.1 surround sound. In the past I have always used my Sound Blaster XtremeGamer to achieve 7.1. I did this because the SB has better options for line in. Most other cards I have dealt with, only allow line in to play thru the front speakers. SB on the other hand has an option to puch line in audio thru all the speakers.

I would like to use as less components as possible, so I can keep the SB card out of the equation, then I would like to do so. Does anyone know if the this Realtek has that feature?

Yes, maybe. Assuming that the chipsets are identical on AMD and intel MBs, the Realtek HD drivers support a "fill" option which will push audio out to the rear speakers in certain modes. I know for certain this is true on the 5:1 systems and would guess it's the same on the 7:1 boards.

Thats great.... Since you gave me what it was called, I was able to research it, but people say its some kind of simulated surround, which can distort audio. Looks like I will stay with SB card. Its funny how the XtremeGamer is old, but is better then the realtek as far as options.

btw... audio for pc isnt made for cars, its made for home theater and gaming

also, (stereo)2 channel audio SHOULD ONLY be played back from 2 channels, RIGHT and LEFT and in the FRONT!
(cause thats the way the human ear is designed)

    just a point here...
no rear audio should be heard.... this is in a car too!
but the car audio since the dawn of car audio, has been wrong!! (acustically speaking)
and in the early days put speakers in the rear, because when car audio 1st came out, thats where they fit...

if for some unknown reason, you want to mirror the front audio 2 channels to the rear 2 channels, well, you need a fully routable audio system
or external audio processing, that does that
    or a cheap fader
    -Thanks

Yes, I know. I am going for home theater surround sound. My SUV is a big box, so it works fairly well. All I really want to do is have the stereo signal from the front speakers cloned. So basically it all sounds even. That way middle and rear have the same experience. Now the speaker fill feature takes the sound and tries to make it into a surround sound, which is not correct and leads to sound quality issues, thats why I asked on the feature. Now that I know RealTek uses tech to try to simulate SS, its no good to me. The SoundBlaster doesn't simulate, but clones instead. The only time 5.1 and 7.1 will be truly playing is if the content actually supports it.

I know realtek is excellent. The fill feature isn't actually taking two channels and making more. Many audio sources can be outputted in more than two channels on a two channel connector. It actually runs encoded audio as stereo output and then anything with a decoder can decode and convert it into multiple channels. It of course doesn't sound as good as running individual channels or using digital but it works well. The realtek chip uses a decoder although it will try to simulate it if the input is not encoded. I have a 2 channel plug going into my 5.1 channel surround sound with a decoder and it sounds great. All of the sounds that are supposed to come from the front come from the front. All of the sound that is supposed to come from the rear come from the rear. I have also configure the rear plugs on my computer to support 5.1 channel analog and configured the headphone jack to be a line in. I plugged my mp3 player into it and it works great. same results as the first.
