    Whine when 3.5mm jack inactive

I have a ground loop 'alternator whine' to fix, and I'm not quite sure how. I know exactly what is causing it. Whenever my line out from the computer is inactive (pc is off, or during initial startup), I get the whine. If the 3.5mm cable which splits to my amp is unplugged, I'm dandy. If the PC is done loading and into windows, I'm dandy. How do I stop this from happening?

    Thanks!

you could try to either ground the negative side of the cable, or possibly try to ground the audio ports on the pc.

Hmmm. I think grounding the audio port is probably the most likely solution, because the problem is that the cable is touching the metal contacts inside the jack, but the jack is inactive. I'll have to research how to do that... I have the computer out at the moment, and the back half of the jacks are housed in metal that doesn't appear to be removable. Would perhaps just grounding that metal work? I'm afraid of shorting out my pc!

that outside metal should be fine-- usually that is attached to the same ground as the cable.

for a test like this, you don't need to permanently affix a cable to it-- just touch a wire from that 'box' to the ground of the power supply, and see if it fixes the problem first before permanently connecting the wire in that method..
