ONE crackling speaker in Grand Prix?

Hey guys, new to this website and to the car audio world. I'm almost 17 and just got my first car two days ago. It is a 2003 Grand Prix GT. The stock sound system is surprisingly good, the only problem is some pretty bad crackling. I've narrowed it down to ONE speaker, and it sounds like it is the speaker in the door panel of the passenger(right) side door. It doesn't seem blown because it is just as loud as the other speakers and I get the same quality aside from the crackling. There are no vibrations because that's what I thought the noise was at first, it's coming from the actual speaker. Any tips or advise? I appreciate it, don't really have the money to buy new speakers after buying a $3k car plus tax, title, etc.

Welcome to MP3car. I would suggest you reverse location on 2 of the speakers first just to narrow down what you are dealing with ie: speaker/wiring/radio issue.

Would I have to take both door panels off to do that? I am willing to, just need to know if that's the case. I have all day tomorrow to work on it. Also, I need to disconnect the negative end of the battery right? Thanks for your advise, and thanks for the warm welcome. I'll reply again tomorrow to let you know how it goes.

Oh yeah, if it helps, I tried with the radio AND with CDs. Got the same problem with both.

Probably the speaker foam is bad.
Worse case would be the cone is separated from the magnet.

I'm gambling on the foam since you still have a majority of sound from the speaker.

You should be able to get a foam kit on eBay.

Pulling door panel depends on your car.

Check the problem speaker for damage first.
If not you can pull it and test on your home stereo. Just don't over power it with the volume.
If it passes the swap it with another on the car.

Be careful doing this, a lot of home stereo equipment is set up for 8ohm speakers, you put in a 4ohm speaker and it'll pull twice as much power as it's supposed to, probably past the rating of the amplifier. You shouldn't hurt it if you start out with the volume at 0 and turn it up slowly to test... but I wouldn't do it at all, I'd stick with what Phil suggested.

I'm gonna do what Phil suggested as soon as I can. Anyone know if you need a torque screwdriver for the door panel screws? Tried a regular phillips head and it didnt work, read somewhere that some people use torque screwdrivers.

Hmmm, I haven't come across anything but Philips (+) screws yet. However the newest car I've worked on is a 2002. Except for my shift knob.

Pulling a door panel is relatively simple but also relatively simple to break the plastic fasteners. If you never done this before I'd look for a manual so that you know where the screws and fasteners are.

Be prepared to break 2 fasteners per door, which is why I'm recommending only 1 door at first.

you should probably check grandprixforums.net-- they'll have a lot more info about your car then we will. i imagine they should have some guides to removeing the door panels as well..
