Amps did make a difference. What I found was that:

    1) the antenna that came with Radio Extreme was OK.

    2) When I connected the car fm to radio it was almost OK. Lots of static and
didn't pick up the stronger stations my head unit would.

    3) When I installed the 10db Radio Shack amp, reception improved.

    4) When I installed the 30db Radio Shack amp, reception marginally improved
over the 10db version. Not enough to warrant the $69 cost.

    5) When I hooked the 10db amp to the Radio extreme antenna, it didn't work

    6) When I attached an after market (auto zone) amplified antenna to the radio
it was not as good as the stock antenna with the 30db amp.

    7) I read in another post somewhere (yes, I did search in another
forum ) that for the radio you need to use the 58 series coax. It is better
shielded and is designed for fm radio. My coax is the 60 series. The coax
is used in the adpter from the antenna plug - to coax - to 1/8" plug. I am
thinking this is my biggest leakage. Gonna try to round up a foot or so of
the 58 series and see if that helps.

    8) Still gonna try attaching the XM antenna. If that doesn't do it, then I am
convinced it's just the radio unit. I've tried multiple antennas, multiple amps
shorter cable lengths, powered antennas, un-powered antennas, even
consulted with executive project suppervisor of my car Mr Bud Weiser.

    thepogcbr900rr,

Not going to XM, just gonna try to attach the antenna to the Radio Extreme.

The XM antenna will NOT work.

XM is a totally different type of signal from standard FM radio.

Also, XM antennas are NOT a passive. The XM receiver sends a small amount of power up the wire to the amplifier/converter in the antenna. Without being powered correctly the antenna will not work.

XM is in the 2.6Ghz freq. range, the antenna is designed and tuned for this frequency range. It will not pickup a signal at 88-107Mhz.

And shortening or adding to the cable could cause it to no longer work with a XM receiver. This is espcially true when adding to the cable. This is why XM antenna extension cables have a built in powered amplifier.

I am quite happy with the Amp. Radio Xtreme is usable with it. Still not anywhere near as good as my head unit's radio. I still have it connected but ended up doing this: My 2001 Sport Trac Install
