    Here's an outside thought..

Do you think its actually the the soundcard making the clicking noise, What kind of BUS is your DVD drive connected ?? if IDE then, is it the newer IDE's with sound cable already built in if so (maybe add the older audio cable to the onboard sound as well) is the drive an External USB or firewaire drive, if so is the USB cable near any power lines in your car ?

Is your master volume on the PC turned up to high ?

I read your problem quickly, and I'm just throwing out other suggestions because I know that the M10000 was made with DVD playback in mind.

    Another response.

This is taken directly from EPIA web site about the M Series mainboard.

The EPIA M-Series' VIA Apollo CLE266 chipset features an embedded MPEG-2 Accelerator for silky smooth DVD playback, and integrated 2D/3D graphics for a rich multimedia experience. With the sizable memory bandwidth of DDR266 SDRAM and the high data transfer speeds of ATA/133, the EPIA M-Series ensures the high performance levels required of today's most popular digital media applications. The user's digital media experience is further enhanced by support for 5.1 surround sound, courtesy of the onboard VIA VT1616 6 Channel AC'97 codec.

IntellaWorks: Thank you for your thoughtful replies. To be more clear, I do not have a problem playing back DVD movies and DVD movie audio. The problem occurs when trying to play back DVD-A (DVD Audio) discs. 24 bit 192 KHz stereo sound. The Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS has support for DVD-A (most other cards do not).

You may be on to something regarding the DVD drive connection. It is an IDE connection. HOWEVER - it came with a 2-pin digital audio cable. I see my soundcard has a 2-pin connection that I can connect the cable to - but my DVD (slimline) does not! Why is this? Again, it is a 2-pin digital audio cable - not the older 4-pin analogue audio cable. Why doesn't my DVD drive seem to have a 2-pin digital audio connection? Is this built into the IDE connection?

Perhaps if I could hook up the digital audio connection cable my problem would be solved?

Don't quote me on this, but I don't think it will work.

DVD Audio has to be outputed in Analog only because of digital rights management.

The C3 just can't keep up. The only reason it can chug along for DVD playback is because of the hardware acceleration.

I would do away with that board and get VIA's new one when its released (EPIA SP). It will have a C3 1.3Ghz CPU and the new CN400 chipset which has S3 UniChrome PRO graphicsa with full MPEG 2 decoder and MPEG 4 accelerator, as opposed to the CLE266 chipset which is only S3 Unichrome (non pro) and only a MPEG 2 accelerator and no MPEG 4 accelerator.

    see here: http://www.viaembedded.com/product/e...herboardId=261

The board also sports the 8237 south bridge, enabling SATA. Also support for DDR400 (much better bandwidth than DDR266).
We are, will have and forever will be...
    But not tommorrow!

Nb. DVD-Audio is not the same thing as the AC3 audio streams on a DVD-Video disc...

It still wouldn't help for DVD Audio.

It may help - an extra 300MHz might do the trick. I think the only thing knackering DVD-A up right now is not enought processor power...

Minimum sys req for DVD-A to work (as per Sound Blaster) is 1GHz CPU. With my 1GHz CPU right now it *does* play the DVD-A back, albeit with "pops". With an extra 300MHz, it may fix the problem

An extra 300 MHz isn't enough to make up for the C3's poor FPU unit, it'll take a lot more then that.
