JVC J-link aux in hack???

I got the JVC kd-sx980 with the front input, which i planed to use to connect to the carputer, but when it finaly came to that, i figured that the input doesn't work. It is just silent. I have taken apart half of the head unit and still no luck. So far i figured out that faceplate is not a problem, but probably pre-amp which controls the input. There is also an option of running this aux through the back cd changer connector. There is the adapter for it for $40, but i don't want to throw the money away if this runs through the same pre-amp. I have found that the j-link adapter uses simple protocol, with pins, to trick the HU to turn on the inputs, but now explanation anywhere . Does anyone know how to do this? Any help is welcome.

Do you have a remote for the HU? I have a 985, and went through this the other day. I had previously had the iPAQ plugged in, but it was a while ago and had forgotten (the shame

)...

Anyway, if you select the input (AM/FM/CD/AUX) on the panel itself, it selects the RCA inputs on the back, If you select 'source' (ie scroll through) from the remote, it selects the 1/8" jack on the front panel.

If you've tried this (or the 980 is different), I apologise for telling you how to suck eggs.

Perhaps you can help me in return: have you tried to 'remote' the face away from the head unit?

YOU ARE A GENIUS. The AUX is not engaged with the facplate controls. I can't believe that. I was acctualy looking in the jvc manual an they don't even mention it. But not to have the aux button programed into the face is just stupid. Thank you, you saved me 10^6 nerv cells.

--This just in -- I just checked the manual again and while they don't mention the remote, the way to access the AUX from the face is to hold down the cd-ch button, not just press it. And the monkeys *** award goes to ME.

As for the remote face, i am actually making aan adapter that will let me have the face connected to the hu when it is droped down as i will mount the hu under the seat in the upside down position, so i can read the display in between my legs. I just have to slightly lean foward to see it. I preassume you have a 15 pin connector on the face. If you do then i can give you some of the pins and what they are and i can find out the rest as mi HU is appart right now. I will make a diagram and post it soon. I will also put the picture of the adapter. My problem is that i would like to be able to remove this adapter on the whim, so it is chalenging, but if that is not your target, you can just solder the pins with a cabel that has 15 leads.

ok here is the pinout for the face

looking at the face back side, with volume control knob on the right and pins closer to the right hand side

from right to left:

1,2 IR Remote
3 Backlight for the LCD
4,5 Vol Control
6,7,8 Screen data
9 Buttons #6,disp,eq,fm-am,cd cd-ch
10 Buttons sel,mode,#1-5
11 att/power,up,down,left,right
12-14 Aux input
15 face power or ground ?

Certainly does help.

Problem I have is that I'm an ideas man; now while I KNOW that the ideas a feasible, the technical deatail can be my downfall

. I have a college education and have nearly completed a Masters Degree, but some of the guys on this site leave me feeling enitrely stupid... (not deliberately)

The aim is to leave HU in dash, run CarPuter audio into the RCAs, and remote the face plate onto a binacle on top of dash so the 7" touchscreen can go over the do8ble DIB slot it is occupying half of.

If you come up with a suitable plug/adaptor arrangement, I'd be keen to see it. I'm going to have a talk to one of the avionic guys I work with about same, but I don't really want to just solder a cable between it if I can help it.

Well here is another idea i was tempering with:

The conector on the HU hast 2 screws holding it to the trim. You get yourself a nice pice of plastic wide enough. Then you cut grooves with dramel so it will fit over the conector, put wires in between the grooves and secure with something and lay it on top of the connector and secure with the existing screws(might need longer ones). Face is little harder as there are no screws like those on the HU.Mabye small holes can be driled but would need to check the clearence inside the face. Then, similarly, you get piece of plastic, cut grooves where connectors are this time, wire in the grooves, secure wire, screw over the connector. My problem is that this does not give me an easy option of removing the face plate when im on the go (don't leave the face in the car in Los Angeles), so i am still pondering the connection for that end. Don't want to mess up the unit so it can't be used normally tommorow.

I will try to put up the picture of the the adapter i have, but that one requires that the face is on the HU, just flip down, or in my case up, as i fliped the while unit upside down
