Is XMPCR audio quality really that bad

I have been reading most of the posts regarding the XMPCR demise - a lot of folks claim that its audio quality is not that good. Is that ture? do I understand that it is not worth the $$$.

For me the analog out quality sucked . There was a constant high pitched whining that was more evident at high volumes and clearly audible while listening to talk/comedy or music like classical. Not to mention a constant low pulsating thumping noise, but that was only apparent when I put the PCR on mute but kept my head unit at high volume. Also it was muffled and wasnt very crisp or vibrant.

The optical out fixed all that, but that added $150+ to the total cost since I had to get a sound card with optical input.

Thanks for the info, one more please, how about the actual sound quality now that you added the digital-out, say, comparing to a CD and also comparing to mp3 file at 192. Thanks.

I would say the SPDIF audio quality is just barely shy of CD quality (XM is compressed) but audio quality is as good or better than 192k MP3. In any case, the SPDIF audio is very acceptable, analog audio is very unacceptable.

my optical sound is great even in a noisy convertible. The analog was popping and whining with the alternator. Was not a pleasant experience at all.

Thanks guys. I will wait till the price drops, it is outragous what is going on ebay now, freaken noobs (bidders). Then again, it is market based econemy, if you can get away with it, power to you. but I am not participating till it goes down to $200 or less! otherwise allofmp3 gets allofmybusiness.

I don't care, 200 or less is fair price, 50 was great price. any thing above 200 is waste and not worth it, I am not even sure if I would pay 200 for it.
