p.s. I never said I could here a difference between any different bit rates, but I'm a moron, so I probably could have said that anyway. maybe... what....dunoh?.. OH!...what?...help me...... ouch....I'm O.K., thank you...
Your statements here are sure to enlighten all here who REALLY know car audio as to whom the moron is, it can be me in your eyes, no problem...Originally Posted by sdashiki

Don't they have volume/SPL (sound pressure level) competitions and quality/SQL (sound quality level) competitions?Originally Posted by sdashiki

sq competition is actually what founded car audio competitions, from back in the day when dave navone & richard clark pioneered this with speakerworks inc., I'm talking early to mid 80's,but db was introduced in the later 80's & grew much more appealing to the spectators & the general masses & by the early 90's & has a huge following so much so, that today there are actually SOME people out there that think that's all there is to car audio competition.
sq in a competition vehicle can be a truly amazing thing, if you ever have the oportunity to sit in a class winning sq competition car for any length of time I promise you that it would change your whole perception of car audio, big bad loud & heavy bass is only a fraction of what car audio competition is all about, fair warning though, if you had the oportunity to have a competition car you will be spoiled for life, as the average system that most think is great will sound like garbage to you, trust me
when you sit in a true competition quality sq car & close your eye's you will actually feel like you kicked your windshield out & have donna summer performing live in front of the car, acurate in all respects, from imaging to tonal acuracy, You will actually be able to, with your eyes closed, point your finger at exactly where the drummer was positioned in that recording, the system can be so transparent that you can't possibly locate the speakers audibaly, but you can tell that the saxaphone player was standing about 3 feet behind & to the left of the singer, it is intoxicating to have a system that good, better than sex man, mainly because it lasts a heck of a lot longer....
I think that's why I got some of the responses here that I got, because this isn't a car audio bb, but a pc in the car bb., & the majority here are not totally into sonic excellence, not that theres anything wrong with that, each person will judge car audio against the best that they have heard & the majority have never had the priviledge of experiencing audio bliss...it is as addictive as crack...without the ill effects, youv'e been warned...
an amature will tell you that they want the car to sound the way they like it, but a pro will tell you that it has to sound the way it's supposed to.... anything less than accurate is nfg.

Supposed to? Yer ******* kidding me, no such thing.Originally Posted by turbocad6

WHy do you think u got peeople who rattle yer windows and those who actually PLAY MUSIC LOUD. Cuz they think it sounds the way its supposed to, DEEEP BOOMING BASS, and other want all around loudness.
A pro? Gimme a break no such thing. We arent talking studio producers and engineers who have a better ear than most, we talking car audio. Car audio pro is an installer, not a tweaker, its always up to the driver/owner.
Supposed to sound? WTF is that.

If you CAN tell the difference between a 256k MP3 & CD (a very few people can) then you could easily use Monkey Audio or FLAC instead. These are lossless and produce sound as good as a CD.
EPoX mATX SocketA w/onboard Geforce4MX / 512MB PC2700 / AthlonXP 1600
Lilliput / DVDrom / Opus 150W / WD 3.5" 160GB / SB Audigy NX
XP home / Road Runner / iGuidance 4.0
Hell, a computer can even play audio-dvds if you want to. A computer can be as good a soundsource as any. Nothing to do with mp3, which you can play through many HU's today, and still sound like krap.
High end audio (home or car, and I don't mean Alpine/Bose) gets pretty close to (if not spot on) the sound of the original recording. That's really the whole idea behind true high-fidelity.Originally Posted by sdashiki
There are different reasons for people rattling your windows. Part of it can be a "Look how big my dick... er wallet... er I mean speakers are!" Some of them like to be assholes. Some just like loud music, or like to feel their music, but that doesn't mean it's how it's "supposed to sound". If an artist wanted a rattling license plate on their track, they probably would have put it in there themselves.
They DO have sound quality competitions. A car audio pro will spend tons of time getting their EQs, crossovers, etc perfectly tuned. Some of them ARE studio producers and engineers, and they want to port that sound quality to their vehicles. If a car audio pro is an installer, I guess we've got a board full of car audio pros.
"Supposed to sound" = close your eyes and it sounds like it's live.

The recording of said performance is not the live performance nor does it sound as though its being played in front of you.
If you talk clarity of sound, thats one thing. But quality? WTF is that? More bits = more quality? Cuz lemme tell ya, CDs aint good quality then, 44Khz? That bull**** when a PCI card or studio can capture 192Khz and higher.
What are we talking, clarity/fidelity? Which mostly comes from speakers, not a good recording. But like a photo negative, you cant create detail where there is no detail. IE low bitrate wont sound good no matter what.
A live sounding recording, as you put it, is what? A CD of a live show? The band playing in my car? What? The acoustics of the car change, and mold the sound from a CD to fit the space, it will always sound different, car to car, player to player, person to person.
Digital recordings are the only safe bet for continuity and like i said, QUALITY? CD IS NOT QUALITY. So thats why we LOVE mp3s, it aint quality, but u can hear it.
You want real quality? Try some wax dammit.
