Thread: what type of amp should i get

It all depends on the type of bass you want really. If your looking for "I can hear you 5 blocks away" then get anything from 500-800w If your looking for good all around bass including surround sound, then get something around 150-300w

I used to have a jl 10" in a single cab truck being powered by 150W 1ch. amp and it was fine for me. Keep in mind that my setup was different because it wasnt in a trunk the speaker was in the cab with me making it louder naturally. I also had a single cab small truck with not a lot of space.. this also made a difference because I was sitting on the speaker, so to me it was pretty loud.

What voice coil is the sub? D2, D4 or D6?

Actually his JL W3 will only hold 300 Watts RMS. I recomend a Elemental Designs NINE.2 amp for your JL W3. It will feed 400 Watts RMS @ 4ohms, just be careful setting the gains and you will be fine. More info on the amp here:

He can't get that one. His woofer is Dual 2 ohm, which means he can hook it up at either 1ohm or 4ohm to the amp. You need something that puts out 300-400 Wats at 1ohm OR 300-400 Watts at 4ohms. That amp is not 1 Ohm stable and 250 watts might not do his bandpass box justice.

Ohh I didn't realize that. Assumed it was 2 Ohm. The D6 threw me! I had that same problem with my ED12A and ended up using two MRD-M300 Alpine V12 Amps since I had one already - one on each voice coil. Works great!
