hifonics or phoenix gold

hi all, i'm looking for a 5.1 amp. the two that i are looking for are the phoenix gold 5.1MT and the hifonics zeus 5.1. I'm not too partial to hifonics cause i don't know much about it, but it does have a higher RMS rating than the phoenix gold.
Both are 50x5 but the PG is 100x1 and the hifonics is 200x1 for the sub. The reason i'm choosing between these two are cause they are the only one's i've found that accept toslink and are in my price range <$500.

what are your preferences and opinions on the two of these amps. thanks

you know, I used to not like PG all that much, but once I actually sat down and looked at their products, especially their new products, I was throughly impressed.

You might want to also look at the THD of the amps, the lower the cleaner it's going to sound....there's more to amps than just RMS ratings....lol

well what i've also seens is the PG has a freq. response from 20-20k, SNR of >100 and is rated at 50x5 at 14.4 (at 12.5 it's rated at 18x5) is this normal?

the hifonics has a freq response of 10-30k, has a SNR ratio of >95 and is rated at 50x5 (doesn't say at what voltage)... still a little confused at what to get

honnestly, they are both good, PG has a little better name recognition....if that means anything to you...lol

The frequency response is important, but only if you actually have speakers that will play those frequencies.....and I'm not talking about just by the specs, but in reality....

I've used a PG M50 2 channel amp for 10 years now in 4 different 4X4's and it has taken some extreme bumps. It is still producing bueatiful sound and has NEVER missed a beat (excuse the pun). Not sure on hifonics as i've never owned one. I believe is is underrated as it appears to give out heaps more power than another cheaper 50WX2 amp I have. Just my thoughts. Cheers.

and since PG gives a rating of 50x5 at 14.4 and 18x5 at 12.5, should i believe the hifonics has similar ratings at those voltages?

I can't comment on the hifonics (as i've never used them) but the PG amp I have is really designed for competition use and it has plenty of punch. I have mine currently powering 2 10in subs and it produces a very tight clean loud base. I have also use dmine in the past to run all 4 door speakers (cant fade front to rear) and it also worked perfectly. I opened my amp up once to have a look and inside was even more impressive with plenty of gold , anodised parts etc... Looked extremely well built. You basically get what you pay for. Not sure if this helped or not.

honneslt, RMS rating is not all that you need to be looking at...the higher wattage amp might be the dirtier amp! I would rather have cleaner power and less of it than the other way around....

as for hifonics, the zeus series is prone to overheating. id avoid. its entry level sound anyways. comparable to sony amplifiers, pioneer amplifiers, etc. they add more crossover features, people cant tell as easily the quality of sound isnt so great.

the PG cheap lines are of the same make, but it is improved. not so much slop, and far less heat issues if any.

where is what I found striking. at superior sound in fresno (and if you go there, first of all tell ryan autry I said hi, but tell him I sent you, he will do the same test) we did an a/b test betwen PG and audison, the PG amp used was the Titanium series 100x2 flagship amp. was told it retailed for about 5 bills. other amp was the audison srx 2, the MOST entry level amp audson makes, retails for $250 and 65x2.

audison wasted the pg. in every way.

so ill suggest as a cost alternative the srx amplifier line. ou can probbaly find the srx2s (four channel version) for under 3 bills on ebay, I promise it will beat the poop outta both the hifonics and pg. combined.

this might blow your budget, but an srx4 plus second subwoofer amplifier is definitely inside your budget.
