Dvd player says it can play DVD-R, can I listen to DVD-R music?

If so, how do I go about doing that? I tried burning mp3s through Nero onto a blank DVD-R disc, but it won't play

Nope, you can't do that. From Pioneer's website:

DVD Video Playback - DVD/DVD-R/RW
CD Playback - CD/CD-R/RW
MP3 - CD-Rom Playback

So, you can only play video from a DVD-R. Any music (audio format) or MP3s have to be from a CD or CD-R.
