Computer speaker set/Home theatre in car?

Ive got a old Tandy computer speaker amp that I have been using on my main pc for years (really sounds awesome, lots of output and clarity despite being Tandy) and I was thinking about throwing it in the car, to save buying a amp, and just running the car speakers to it. I know there is probably a ohms problem, but if I can work around that, what do you think?

I know ive seen where people talk about using computer speakes and home theatre recievers in their car for amps.

Technically, you'd need to make sure that:

-you have the right power. Does it take 12v UNregulated? How much amp/watts of power does it DRAW?

-is it stable @ 4ohms? as probably your carspeakers are 4ohm. If it's a 2 channel amp, you could always hook up your front and rear speakers in series (but keep left/right separated, duh!), which makes it 8ohm, at which the amp would probably be stable.

I would be running it off of the inverter, theres the power question. I will have to check out the ohms, Im using home stereo speakers on it now, which Im sure are either 6 or 8 ohm, I could always wire it in series, I dont usually have the need to distinguish front from rear.

I would find out what the wattage rating, thd, etc is of that amplifier...

generally computer speaker amps aren't all that powerful...

Oh, I know, its not powerful at all, but I used it for my home studio and it pushed the stereo speakers fine, and was quite loud and clear.

I'll have to test it with the acoustics of the car tho. Just a thought, might as well try.

As long as you don't surpass the power rating of your inverter, trying it won't hurt.

Let us know how it went!
