you don't have to worry about underpowering them as much as you do with clipping. If you were pushing your amp real hard to get as close to the 60w as possible it's likely your amp was clipping and therfore sending a distorted signal to the speaker. which is very harmful.

the age of the speaker and it's history could have had something to do with it as well.

At 3-4 years, you could expect a speaker like that to blow. It wasn't the fault of loud music. As long as the amp gain was adjusted properly (no distortion) there was nothing you could have done. Buy a new one.

Also, since yours don't havet the crossovers, maybe you should try some of those bass filters. They worked well on some speakers I used to have.

he said he had the amp set to high pass filter. while not the best option for a crossover it will cut out the low freqs that could be damaging.

Does that filter out all of the bass though? I had my amp set up the same way with my cerwin vegas and kept blowing them. I installed the bass filters and they lasted a lot longer.

depends on where the crossover point of that HPF is and how steep the slope is.

If you have it set to 100hz and it's a first order filter, you'll easily get a lot of 80hz and 70 hz passed through. So it all depends on the quality of the crossover in the amp.

I mean having the bass blocker in addition to using the HPF sure won't hurt anything, but it shouldn't be necessary.
