    Speaker setup help

Would putting a pair of mid ranges and pair of tweeters in the front and a sub in the boot be a much better idea then just slapping in a pair of 6*9s in the back like everyone does?

You worded the question in a way that makes you sound as if you already know the answer. In fact a lot of people concerned about sound quality do that.

I suppose you could argue that a ****ty subwoofer could be worse than premium 6x9s. But in general, yes, a sub in the trunk and components up front kick the **** out of 6x9s. The imaging for one is supperior, as the components are bringing the stage up front where it belongs. Second, there's no way a 6x9 can match the frequency response of a dedicated subwoofer.

make sure the component set you go with up front has sufficient low frequency extension to cover for those 6x9's you are ditching. doesnt matter how well your car stages, if you have a midbass gap, your car will sound like poop. especially if you crank the subwoofer amp gain to compensate.

there are many good sets out there that will be able to play as midbassy as you need. adire kodas and CDT HD come to mind off the bat. I can also say for sure that infinity reference, infinity kappa, and cdt clasics arent gonna have the midbass support you need. JL XR round speakers are known for being midbassy. I personally thing the VR set has a low enough extension, too. TR doesnt.... focal access doesnt. every other focal line Ive heard does. if you dont mind distortion the DD 6.5's, peerles csx, and ID chameleon speakers go low enough. eclipse pointsource cant go very low. Im not sure about their linesource speakers. thats about all I can think off off the top of my head.
