    My crazy Idea

ok, so I have a MAME cab, and when it came to the audio I just wired in PC speakers , but cut the wires leading to the PC speakers and ran them to the existing arcade speakers (which were, just by chance) Car audio speakers.

So what I plan to do was get some 5.1 set up, but cut the wires to the speakers ,except the subwoofer, it'll go in the trunk I know its not a real sub but I got my car for performance not ear rattling bass, and run the wires to the existing radio plug wires using an after market radio harness. that way if I ever remove the carpc for some reason, no stock wiring will be tampered with.

Would it sound like ****, or is it possible?

I do not want to run an AMP I have enough power getting sucked from my car with the car puter, XBOX, and greddy gauges. Any thoughts will be taken into consideration.

Eh, I've done it with little pioneer 25watt cheapo from wal-mart. Sounded fine powered by my cambridge soundworks. But this has a built-in amp inside. I don't quite know what your plans are, but probably will work and sound ok. Won't work all that great if you're gonna try and power those speakers from your sound card alone, and probably will damage your sound card.

Most 5.1 set ups have an amp built into the subwoofer and an external power supply, my idea was just to wire in the speakers to be on when the car is on via the speakers power wire.

I guess I should rephrase my question a little:

would cutting the speakers off a 5.1 set up and replacing them with car audio speakers sound good in the car? Instead of cutting the wires leading to the car speakers Id hack up an aftermarket wireharness and plug that into the stock plug.

it might sound as good as the stock radio in your car, but that is the best it would sound. It's just not the right way to do it, and you can get a nice used amp on ebay for cheap probably.

Also, those speakers from your 5.1 channel speaker set are probably 8 ohm, maybe even 16 ohm, where the car ones are most likely 4 ohm. This would mean that the car speakers would be getting more power, but it could also result in an overheated amp.

Basically, I could never recommend what you are doing, but if you just have it laying around, you could always try it. I wouldnt like it, but everyone has different wants and needs.

well, my major issue with wiring up an amp is space. the XBOX is under the passanger seat, and the PC under the drivers seat. Im not too worried about an overheated amp, I dont really drive my car all that much (honestly I dont even know why I bothered installing a PC and or XBOX, boredom I suppose).

I appriciate your feedback and I'll consider it, my course of action isnt set in stone yet.

PS: Ebay sucks, and has begin to suck exponentially more and more, Id rather get a used amp here then there. Plus shipping is outrageous

I'd say do it. I've done it, sounded fine for what it was. Compared to what I have now, it was a joke, but back then I didn't care. If anything, your amp in your sub will overheat, maybe die. But worth a shot right?

I wouldn't worry about the power the amp would suck. I hooked an ammeter up to an amp rated at about 200W RMS, and idling (no music) it was only about 100 mA, low enough that I could power it from a small gel cell.

Now, one place where a cheap 5.1 box makes sense is if you get one with digital inputs... then you can run optical or coax from the car PC and have genuine Dolby Digital/DTS/Dolby Prologic surround in your car. I'd want to bypass the internal amps and get line level outs for the car amp... if I find one of those boxes on clearance at Walmart I'll give it a try.

so you basically want to use the internal amp of the 5.1 to power car audio speakers, car audio speakers run at 4 ohm and i assume most pc speakers are around the 8 ohm mark, sounds like a really good way to overheat and bugger up the 5.1 amp, i'd be watching it dosent catch fire personally
