Ah snap! I done blew me a fuse!! And possibly my amp!!

Ok.. So I'm jamming to Another Brick in the Wall redone by KoRn on the way home from lunch and while I'm belting out "WE DON'T NEED NO EDUCAT...."

my system totally goes quite.. At first I think that my carputer just locked up but it wasn't. Then I start to smell something electrical so I switch over to the radio and I got no sound there. I pinpoint it to my AMP and start to worry that I freakin fried it. Luckily I'm about 200 yds away from home. I get home and feel the amp. Feels very warm but I think that is pretty usual..

I take off the caps so I can see the power LED and turn on my truck. I get nothing on my AMP. So then I really thought I fried it.. Then I thought to check the fuse. It was blown..

What would cause this and what should I check BEFORE I get another fuse?

Man I hope my amp isn't blown. Don't really have the money to get a new one .

    Thanks for any help!

low voltage will causes the current to go up
small awg wire will also cause a voltage drop
you did not say size of power watts/rms and size of cap or how long the wire run/size of wire
make sure your ground at the battery and the ground for your amp are clear of rust/corrosion becase it can cause resistance also

Not sure what gauge my wire is. I bought an amp wiring kit at my local shop and told them what I was using so I'm sure it's appropriate. The amp is a Rockford Fosgate 500X. The run is from the battery to the amp which is right behind my truck seat. The ground wire goes from the middle of my truck (under the console) to the amp.

hrm, last time I had that burning smell, the power transistors in the amp blew and took the fuse with them. But a trip to my local electronics store to get the NTE replacements fixed that problem.

I have had 2 amps do it to me for no reason whatsoever, but after putting in the replacements they worked great for a long time after

    how old is the amp?

Not sure.. Bought it used. It doesn't look that hold cosmetically. How would I tell if that is what's wrong with mine?

Just take off the back, you will see a circuit board with rows of transistors on either side, just check them all, the culprit will probably have a nice crack in it with burn marks if that was your problem, but if you were smelling burning and it was coming from the amp that is probably the problem. The only other thing i've had happen on a fosgate was some sort of protection diode that exploded and needed replacement

but it's worth a look before you replace the fuse

well try a new fuse if the amp is blow/damaged that rockford will let you know right away by blowing the new fuse
rockfords seem to take a beating and keep on ticking
also see if your impedance on you speaker wiring are meeting the amps specs
real low impedance will also cause high current draws
just a thought but i doubled my factory ground under the hood for extra saftey for high currents

On a side note. It has been running fine for almost a year.

I put another fuse in and it blew instantly. I opened up the amp and took some pics:

As you can see closely in the second picture there is a fried wire on that thing.

Any chance you can tell from the pics if it can be fixed?
