    Some strange noise...

Hi all, I hope someone can help me with this...

As you might know, I'm using my Compaq Ipaq 3850 to play my mp3's with a 512 mb sd card. Up till recently I was using a fm modulator, but today I hooked up my old 2 channel 150 watt amp and ditched the modulator...

Here's the thing... When I'm running my ipaq with the car adapter plugged into the lighter I get some odd noise (kinda a swishy sound and some static like sound) If I turn it up enough I cant hear the noise below the music... but as soon as I remove the cig adapter and the ipaq runs on it's internal battery it sounds great, no more noise...

I'm using good wires and have a good ground at my amp. the noise only happens when I powering the ipaq with the car adapter.

    Thanks for any help

Its probably in need of a ground loop isolator (radio shack).
Before you run out and buy one, though, make sure your audio cables arent near the power cable when it is plugged in, as noise would definitely result from that as well.

Thanks shizzle... I went outside and re-routed my audio cables away from the power cables and it made no difference, looks like I need a ground loop isolator... Judging by the googled image of one it just goes inline with my rca audio cables right? What does a ground loop isolator do exactly?

    Thanks

Basically you are hearing interference from the power in some form or another. Since I am no expert and only understand the basic premise, I will offer you a little something I found with

I decided to try something... I took my powerpack outside (good for boosting cars and powering stuff while camping) and plugged my cig adapter for my ipaq into it and there was no noise at all in the system, then I plugged the cig adapter back into the car's cig lighter and instant noise...

Yeah, the isolator will probably help, but I would recommend a different source for power, because that cig adapter is obviously not clean power. I would be worried if it were humming that much for me.
