    Amp Question

I am not new to computers, but I am very new to car audio. I wish to replace my factory head unit with a carputer and LCD. What kind of amp can I buy or make that can output the sound to my 4 factory 4Runner speakers and be placed behind the screen?

You need a 4 channel amplifier. This is usually mounted in the trunk, or behind the seats, but I can't say I've ever heard of putting it behind the dash...They connect directly to the car's battery, and they do need some kind of air circulation around them...give up the behind the dash ideea, as usually the 4 channel amps are too big to fit in there anyway...

What I meant was, 1. there's probably not ebough space in there, and you probably need to trim the HU a little, and 2. if the HU doesn't have a remote or at least steering wheel controls, it will be of no use. Not to mention, in terms of sound quality an amp always reproduces a better sound then an HU, let alone a factory head unit.

Alpine made a small footprint 4 channel amp that would fit behind the dash LONG ago.. I had one at one point. Alpine 3531.

That wouldnt do any good because you couldnt be able to control the headunit. And increasing the volume from just the aux of a headunit would not sound good at all.
Second of all if you wanted to do a true 5.1 setup only few aftermarket headunits have 5.1 inputs which cost a few hundred. Might as well stick to the 4ch amp idea.
And while you're at it i'd reccomend upgrading your speakers, becuase most stock speakers only accomadate 15 watts max and you'd surely burn them out with a even a moderately sized amp.
