I might put the CarPC on hold ATM and get this.

    Parrot Rhythm N'Blue.

A CD MP3/CDR/RW/AM/FM/RDS player headunit with built Bluetooth handsfree.

Sure it won't have Sat Nav, or hold gigs and gigs without changing disc, but for the moment, I reckon it is the simpler option for getting decent "converged" technology into an older car, while I make plans for the Car PC/Audio install.

As an example The Saab is a 92 convertible, so a proper classic turbo.
It has a Sony X-RC420RDS radio cassette with changer input cable.

I could either get a new MP3 changer or an Archos GMini XS200 player and use a Cassette adaptor (sounds surprisingly good using the GFs), then spend on a Parrot CK3100 bluetooth handsfree kit, and have an external phone display and microphone to hide.
    Cost about £300GBP.

Or finish the CarPC, ignore the fact that I've got a 7" tft to mould in, and get a motorised in dash one, and a 100gig Laptop drive. Then build and install the PC now with the cheap 4 channel Blue "Mosfet" amp, and Aztec radio card for FM only, and still have a mic and GPS reciever to install.
Cost about £350-400GBP + time to assemble.

or Get the Parrot MP3 headunit with Bluetooth, ignore GPS etc for now, and just plug and play for £150GBP approx.

Then assemble and build the perfect CarPC later when I have something more modern and less rare, and less likely to be runing by major surgery.

    Meh.

You can only play your MP3s on CDs. That's a limitation right there.

Now if you could allow bluetooth transfer of music files from a PC or laptop with bluetooth, that would be very, very cool.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

I installed a parrot 3100 kit in the GF car. It is a high quality unit, and works well. The manual (obviously translated from another language-French because the company is French) leaves a lot to be desired, but I got by with it.

I noticed thier new stereo, but as mentioned, it has limitations. But, it depends on your needs.

The 3100 is much cheaper then you think. Check ebay. I bought it from a guy in England, and shipped it cost me less then $200 US.

I think the one limitation, and I have contacted perrot about it, that the stereo should have aux in. That would make it a perfect headunit for me, and possibly for many more people.

It comes down to your needs. GPS for me is probably the most important thing for me, and music second, when it comes to a carputer. If music is your only concern, or most important, and funding is either first or second, then an MP3 capable headunit is a great option, or even just an Ipod or other MP3 player with your stock HU, and a cheap BT earmic will suffice.

It seems though, that BT phone integration is important to you. If that is the case, then the parrot stereo, with MP3 and the like, is a good option for you, and cheaper and easier.

See it isn't just the money.
I have a 7" CarTFT screen that I started to glass into the lower console for my celica.

Then I sold it. Biggest mistake I make with my old Saab was butchering it to take a screen. the new one is rarer and better condition and a convertible. Sure it has the limitation of CDs instead of an HDD, but it is compact and has a proper RDS AM/FM tuner. Unless I wait Seth, I'm stuck with moderate quality FM on a PCI card, and the cost of a motorised screen on a car that I don't want to butcher. Later, when I change again, it might be for something less desirable, or even more desirable, but more modern, I don't mind screwing with modern cars, it is charismatic old ones I like to see stock. A Saab 900 T16S Convertible is a very charismatic car, and fantastic with the roof down at night, heater up, with nice smooth leather beneath you. Really A Saab demands something like Nakamichi or Macintosh Audio gear as an upgrade over the stock stuff (Clarion in newer stuff, high end Philips/Clarion/Sony in older stuff). Audio gera that looks old and classy or matches the dials, not gaudy bright and flashy. You can get away with that in a BMW, but then Beemer drivers have no taste.

Yeah, I'm serious. Had fun with the CarPC first time round, and it worked., but generally found myself only listening to say 40 albums most of the time. Easily fit that onto a couple of CDs. If I use CDRWs, I can pick and choose what I want depending on mood.

I'm no mechanic/electrician, so while it worked, I managed to break things first time round, that took some of my confidence. With not wanting to screw up the parts, or make a mess of a decent car, I think I might just be better in putting it on hold. I'm under enough stress ATM than have my hobbies freaking me out financially/mechanically/confidence wise, when I'm on a bit of a downer and still getting over quitting smoking.

Mid 30's and still playing with "toys" and watching every penny I spend is a weird place to be ATM. My head is all over the place. As a gift to myself, fr quitting smoking, I blind bought the Saab off ebay, so I now have a turbo convertible. It isn't as nice as I hoped, but it is still a mechanically strong, good solid car, but the time between buying the Saab and finally getting a buyer for the Celica cost me about £600GBP in credit card costs, advertising, fuel and insurance costs for the couple of months. iIreally knocked a hell out of myself to realise just how close to broke I really was.

I have a £65k mortgage, and if I max all my credit cards, that is another £70k (jesus that is scary), but I only owe a little on one card, but don't earn enough to clear anything off any of them if I went mad and blew things. I earn less than £20k a year. how the hell did I get so much credit?

Sounds VERY familiar. Funny, no matter how much I make, it seems like it isn't enough.

Perhaps this calls for using what you have. Or, perhaps sell what you have, and buy something that will make you happy. For the longest time, I used an MP3 player. Then upgraded to something called an I-Opener. Now I am progressing on a carputer. Unfortunately, everything in life is a balancing act. IN this case, you have to balance features, with cost, and time, and energy. It isn't always easy.

Good luck. As far as your choice, I think the parrot radio is a good one.

    I have very tidy components.
    M10K Epia
    256meg ram.
    120Gig 3.5" Hdd (want a 100gig laptop HDD)
    Opus 120watt bare board PSU
    Laptop slot DVD/CDRW drive.
    Netgear PCI WiFi
    AverTV studio FM&TV card.
CarTFT 7" TS TFT (in pieces with the front glassed into a Celica front panel).

It is just getting them together. ATM I can't even play CDs never mind MP3s, as the car only has RC, although I do occasionaly stick the GFs Archos Gmini on a cassette adaptor and it actually sounds pretty good.

I could butcher a spare centre console and get a new front panel for the screen, or I could shell out for a motorised indash screen, but I still need to find somewhere for the DVD, the spare din slot has gauges in.

I do want to have a CarPC again, and having built one getting it working it was fun, but at the minute, I'm just looking for the easy ticket. I seem to have lost some of the drive I had doing it last time, this time seems to be about taking it slow, my life just seems to be too full doing nothing.
