hey guys, i just wanted to let people know that despite not being able to find any reviews or information on sq, i went ahead and decided to try out the $250 Performance Teknique ICBM-5.1 amp.

i am not an expert on amps, but i can say it definitely seems to be worth the money! it is powering 2 1" tweeters and 2 4" mids up front, as well as 2 5.25" and 2 more 4" mids in the back (all infinity reference). and they sound great and seem to have plenty of power. im planning on adding an 8" or 10" sub soon. we'll see how that goes.

i have not been able to get the spdif working from my epia m10000 to the coax in of the amp. it hasnt been that big of a priority since i have other issues right now hehe. but i will work on seeing if i can get that working soon.

i just wanted to let people know that this seems to be a very price friendly want to get surround sound. my expectations werent too high for the $250 price tag. but, everything works and it seems to be a decent amp.

For $250 that sounds like a good deal. I've never heard of Performance Teknique. I went to their website to find more info on that amp and half the links on their page do not work. Not a good sign for a long term investment but at $250, if you get 2 years out of it I'd still call it a deal.

One thing I would worry about in this arena of digital input amplifiers is the DAC that is on board. People pay alot of money for a stand-alone DAC so I can't imagine the onboard one will be much better than those found on mid-level head units. The best solution is to find a stand-alone DAC or a processor that accepts digital input. There are solutions from Alpine, Zapco, and other big name brands.

i just wanna share my experience with an amp called zx1 from hifonics, well known here, well it does the job from my epia spdif output to the amp one cable, from the amp the speakers well everything was going good, untill i play an ac3 file well the thump was back, this time on every time that the amp was detecting an ac3 source it gives me the terrible thump,so i decided to return this thing. also another problem is that the only way to control the volume has to be done thru the remote control.i hope that the Performance Teknique ICBM-5.1,will not do the same thing.for now i have an eye on the combo of clarion's dvc920 and dvh940 i know about the issue of the optical input so i will continue my research.

I did a quick search on this site for DVH940 and I don't see anyone mentioning they actually got it to work with a digital connection from a carputer. The way Clarion's optical inputs have worked in the past is that they are tied closely to CeNet devices. Unless a CeNet device is selected and playing (ie a clarion head unit, disc changer, or dvd player), the processor will not read the input from the optical connection.

I could be wrong about the DVH940 but make sure you buy it from an authorized retailer that will allow you to return it if it doesn't work out. ...and let us know how things turn out if you do go this route.

it is true that the dvh940 by itself wont work, the dvc920 will control the dvh940 in the pictures of the dvh940 i just don like the way of the optical inputs look they are very diferent from the standards,so like i said my research will continue untill i get all the answers on this brothers,i really like this setup.another idea that i have floating in my mind is to get one of those 100 dlls home theater systems those that are very slime and hack it,just use the mainboard for the decoding get the signal for the diferent channels and route them to my amp.but then i will need to build a power supply for this, tiny enough to fit all in an old amp case.but thats my last resource.

I have the Hifonics ZX 5.1. It has some warts. There is digital noise in the sub chanel and it thumps some times changing from PCM to Dolby or DTS.
The Teknique ICBM-5.1 5.1 appears to be the same amp as the Hifionics except for the heatsink. The input panel is identical. Good price for that amp even if you're just using the analog in

It's a stretch but you might be able to find a used Alpine H700 unit on ebay. I found mine at $420 about a year ago.

this concept doesn't make sense to me...

people use it all the time when talking about motorcycle tires on sport bikes. The center always wears out first while the sides still have tread left. People have problems spending the money on a new set of tires when they still have tread left on the sides, even though they are down to the chords on the center.

    how does this make sense?

you buy tires for your car, you wear them unevenly and don't even wear the rubber on the sides....so you're only using what? 75% of the tire? but you have to get the side of the tire to use the whole tire....

I have a computer sitting on my desk that can do things that I wouldn't ever even DREAM of being possible, but I still bought it, I still use it for the 30% of it's capabilities.

I use a tissue, I blow my nose, then I throw it away, but there was still an area on that tissue that didn't have snot on it, so I could have used it more, but I didn't

I'm only using the fronts and the sub on mine, not even using rears or 5.1

If you were to buy an EQ, but need to adjust every the band, would you complain about how it has more than you need?

these are the same thought process as people seem to have with the Alpine unit, and I just don't get it!

So if it didn't do all the things it does, but it still cost teh same amount, would you buy it then?

Who cares if you don't use it all, it's the best piece of equipment for such a project, hands down! (In 90% of the cases) Why go with something else just because you don't want to buy the alpine because it does more than you need it to, but it does what you need it to absolutely perfect?! I just don't get it!

However, I am not positive that all three amps have optical ins because the website fails to mention what type of ins their amps have
I know that the Audison doesn't have optical inputs.

I searched on the Soundstream, and it doesn't appear to have optical inputs either.

I can't find ANY information about the Vector D 5.1 either, can anyone else?

Other than what's on that web page, which says it has an optical input, I can't even find the companies home page!
