Well, that's what I guess he means...

Personally I think they are just protecting their own brand with proprietary connections and protocols so you can't mix brands.
They haven't heard about carpc and if they have, they know it's no threat to their marketshare.
    i guess that make sense??

    lol

I was gethering that he thought that the use of 5.1 optic amps PERIOD was against the CarPC concept...damn internet, makes things more confusing

    Pure Digital Amp

From my understanding, the only solution to all these posts is what I posted on post #39. And yes, it does DTS.

mkay - I google it, I get very little about it

not to mention I don't see any prices, or any mention of it being avaliable on both sides of the pond...

while it might technically be the only soultion, IMO, it's not a solution at all because it's really not avaliable....I'd love to see some more information (reviews, price, etc..). Can you provide a few links to this information perhaps?

One thing that concerns me deeply is this

Digital EQ control.(4 point per channel)
is that saying they there are only 4 bands per channel? if so, that's pretty pointless

Unless a CeNet device is selected and playing (ie a clarion head unit, disc changer, or dvd player), the processor will not read the input from the optical connection.

I could be wrong about the DVH940 but make sure you buy it from an authorized retailer that will allow you to return it if it doesn't work out. ...and let us know how things turn out if you do go this route.
Guys, I broke down and bought the DVC920/DVH940 combo and "rigged" a toslink cable. Drum roll please...

It works. I've gotten Linear PCM and Dolby Digital to go out my Commell LV-675's SPDIF (optical) out and drive sound from the decoder.

Found one reference on google that pointed me in the right direction... it basically said cut the grey connector off the optical cable that comes with the DVH940 and then add a regular toslink connector (which I have yet to get). I just cut the grey conn off and stuck the bare glass into my SPDIF conn -- working for now. I have the ends on order.

So, the net is, the Clarion stuff works as an outboard decoder (and is a *****load cheaper than the Alpine). I suspect in a car environment, it would be hard to tell the alpine from the clarion. (I'm not trying to start a flame war here.) But for those who want a nice clean digital connection from the PC into their AMPs -- this is a VERY cost effective way to do it. (assuming you have the amps on hand).

Here's the link to the pdf I found that describes the cable mod:
    www.clarion-eu.com/nl/uploads/ media/How_to_connect_VS718_to_DVH923.pdf

It appears to be a clarion Europe site that is hosting it. They even promote the fact that they are the only ones that don't need a head unit to control the processor.

Let me just say, it all seems to be working fine.

(and forget the local yokal fools at the stereo store -- they know squat about using anything in an unconventional manner -- not to offend any stereo installers in the bunch)

Here's the back of the unit. I have the controller plugged into the left jack
(not the power jack) and the right side one is the weirdo optical.

The next pic is the weirdo connector I cut off and tried to attach to another toslink cable -- it didn't work. I'm guessing that the connectors are unidirectional. Believe it or not, there is a little PCB inside and optocoupler there.

(and more to come on the rest of my setup in the coming weeks -- it's an 05 F150, and you can bet I'm taking advantage of all the room behind my console)

all you've got is a 3 band PEQ on that thing.

there's NO way it will be as tuneable as the alpine, so IMO, no way it will sound as good as the alpine....HOWEVER, with that said, I also believe that for the average user/listener it will be perfect.

I'm not a big fan of Clarion, but hey, they work great for other people (waiting to start another discussion about HUs where someone calls me out and then doesn't back it up....lol)

I do have one question though, and this might be answered in the link posted, but how are you controlling the unit if you don't have a clarion HU? I'm really interested to see how this works!

Kidos on taking on the challenge!

Might I suggest you post these findings up in a brand new thread? I'm sure someone out there (if not quite a few people) would be greatful since it will probably get lost in the mix in this thread.

Also, on the creativity of installers in shops, I agree on average installers, however, with high end shops, you will have a harder time getting installers to do the boring and mundane...
