Two audio signals, one input.

I've got a laptop in the back. I've an ipod in the front. Sometimes I want to use the ipod without even turning the laptop on. Short of manually unplugging/plugging cables from my amp, are there any options besides using a mixer (as suggested here: http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/show...759#post621759)

I think u could just use a simple audio switch. You can get one from ebay or Radioshack, or probably any audio store. Just put the switch somewhere up front and switch it depending on the source. Heres a link for a 10 dollar switch that does Audio/Video but which can probably just be used for audio alone:

I dont think u would wanna do the actual switching with the stereo up on full blast...cause there would probably be some kinda noise. But u could jus turn the vol. down and switch.

you could just slice the wires and saughter them into one...

that piece canuk suggested looks like what you need. if you want to spend a little more and be able to hide the unit check out http://www.davidnavone.com i'm sure he offers a current sensing switch. you would have one unit as your main piece and when you draw current to power the other device the switch would switch over to the other unit's output

I am trying a passive mixer to resolve my multiple aux inputs, such as the Rolls MX41. I wanted something I didn't have to manually switch, and that I didn't have to power. I haven't got it yet, but I'll let you know how it works. If that doesn't work, it looks like I will be getting the David Navone autoswitch.

Just use a DPDT switch. Connect all ground together and have the switch select the input dependent on which way its flipped. cost you about $5 at radio shack.

never mind, I should have read that you didn't want to go the mixer route.

Just remember that soldering the wires together will mean that some voltage from the one sound source will flow into the sound source that is not turned on. That means that the laptop voltage will flow into the iPod.

Is it enough to blow up the iPod? Don't know. It might. Or it might never.
