Best thing to do is listen to them both your self, and decide which one YOU like best. People want different things out of music, you will be the best judge of what sounds best to you.
I want to know which sub is actually better

Sony Xplode= Teh suck. The make decent head units but cmon they sell their equipment at Wal-Mart. Your paying for the name only if you buy a pair of speakers and/or subs from them.

Neither sub is GREAT. However the Comp VRs at least have some power handling. Sony XPlods do just that. They have weak cones and weak coils. They aren't loud and they sound bad, those two things = ****ty sub.
The VRs aren't great either, but they can take some power, they sound decent, and they will be LOUD in the right enclosure. If you have a choice pick neither, but if you have to go with one, go with the Kickers.

Agreed with above. Kicker is a better brand all around. (still not the best for everything). I'll add this. If it's a choice between the XPlod's & the Comp's, go with the comps. If I were you, however, I'd shop around online (ebay) and get Kicker Solobaric's. If you're careful, you can get em cheap and still get good product. I got my 12" Solo's for $99/each a year & a half ago & they were still factory-wrapped.Originally Posted by cupcakes
They now come in round shaped cones as well I think but the square cones give you more cone-area for the given size (since a 12" square gives you 144" sq of cone as opposed to 113" sq from a circle). The real beauty of the Solo's is that they use a TINY amount of airspace to produce the awesome sound. I think my boxes needed just a shade over 1 sqft of airspace per sub to produce optimum if I remember right.
If airspace (and hence the total size of the enclosure) isn't of big concern to you, then I'd get away from Kicker and go with the JL Audio. Their higher-end subs are the cleanest you'll find.

as for the box, kicker recomends anything from 1.2 cubic feet to 2.? cubic feet. i had built a 1.2ft box, sounded good, then i built a monstor 2.2 ft box... the larger of the two produces the better sound. but, it all depends on the type of music you listen too the most and the type of bass you want. if you want really deep bass; go for a ported box. the sell on ebay for like 50-75 bucks: they are well worth it. or if you live near a lowes, go get some 3/4" mdf (they will cut it to your specs) and build your own, go crazy and get all custom.

I happen to actually have both brands. i plan to install the kicker comps. I'm going to remove all the speakers that came with the car and upgrade everything. Even add a dvd player. I'm worried about spending too much in the trunk bacause my last car was hit from behind.
