Do you think it would be possible to fit a 1/2 DIN sized EQ in the area beneath the A/C controls (like attached right underneath that) or no? Or possibly even a full headunit? Basically I will be replacing the entire centre console area (2 DIN slots + 1/2 DIN of cupholder) with my LCD but I want manual volume/fader/EQ and a separate audio source in case the PC goes down. So I want to put either a 1/2 DIN EQ with AUX input (for my iRiver) or a full headunit in this extra area. I can get a pic if it would help.
And by "possible" I mean fairly easy with little to no modding, I don't really know what's under that bit of plastic or how/if it comes off.

Guess no one has ever tried that or thought about it. I have another question anyway: Is there any trick to removing the interior panels to run cables through? I want to make sure I don't break anything while trying to run some power and RCA cables.

dude why dont you put a headunit in one of the DIN slots and than mount it really deep with enough room to put a touchscreen in front of it. and have some type of way were the touchscreen can flip face down to expose the radio. i seen someone on here do it with a bmw and his stock radio. it was sweet!

Status: VM GTI sold, got out of the CarPC tinkering hobby, but I still think about getting back in.
I also want to install my single DIN Alpine HU in the area below the HVAC knobs. My LCD will fill the entire DDin hole and swing out on the bottom to allow a small keyboard/track ball to slide out.
My plan is to take the center console out and install the HU at an angle about where the ash tray is.
If you haven't already figured out the center console. Let me know I'll send you a breif description.
Hmm that could work... makes volume control a pain though since I will be using the HU for that. But then I can keep my stock units and my AUX input adapter I bought for the CD changer connector in the trunk for $120 won't go to waste.

Looks pretty good. Lots of custom work...
maybe you've already started. But I've been working on installing a 7" screen in my friends Mk4 Golf. We settled on replacing the centre air vents, and I'm really impressed with the result... not finished yet but its going to look completely stock.
We're ditching the cup holder, this will have an SD card slot for MP3's.
We're mounting the various ASR, hazards switches etc. in a panel in place of the top DIN slot, leaving the bottom DIN slot free for a radio or storage box.
I'll post some pics next week once I've machined the bezel. So far I've just made the frame which supports the computer pcb's & TFT panel.
