Thread: Complete newbie to computer car audio

sorry guys forgot to say this i found this NOISE help with laptop setup but there was no reply if it was fixed or not.

when plugged into the inverter i get a constant noise does not get louder when the rpm's go up im thinking i need to reground the lighter and tips on how to go about it step wise. crosses fingers and hope that its only a ground wire from the lighter

I think proper grounding will certainly help the problem. I don't know if it will completely resolve the problem. It might.

ok well i regrounded the lighter without the situation being resolved. I thought for a min and ran a extension cord from the garage to the laptop to see if that would temp correct the problem and what do you know it did the same thing interfearance. Any suggestions would help now.

Setup is simple

pioneer premier 860mp
enternal xm display hard wired using one of these CD-RB10 ip bus also have a 4 channel amp connected.

what i do is plug the laptop into the xm y cable and all works fine until i plug the laptop into the lighter or now in a test case a power source in general. lighter or extension cord from home power still causing bad interferance until the power is is unplugged then no noises and crisp and loud as ever

i would appreciate some routes to go to eliminate this noise as im on the road alot and having a good dvd is nice to watch with the power plugged in

darquepervert thank you for your response seems that this issue has occured with many but without any resolution there for i have given up on the idea due to lack of knowledge on using pc's in cars. And thanks to all that have read this post

hey, a good idea is modifiying yoru inverter and running it through is distribution block. Make sure its grounded (the block). Seriosly, don't give up. Its teh exploration and trail blazng that makes this project so worth while. The end result will be so worth it.

how do you connect your laptop to the Y cable?? with a headphone jack style plug?

From what you tell us.... i know a VERY simple fix....
Get a ground loop isolator off ebay for $10... go to radio shack and get the proper connectors to convert from 1/8" jack to RCA... then from RCA back to 1/8" for the y cable.... put that inbetween the Y cable and your laptop...

If you don't wanna wait, you could probably pick up a ground loop isolator at any car audio shop.

What these do is simply remove all the electrical signal from your audio cable and only allows the audio through, works like a charm. I have a couple in my car, had horrible interference, now it's crystal clear.

Basically you are getting interference from your laptop, and sending that through the audio cable... this will fix it. HOORAY!

I went out and got the items you sugeested 1 ground loop isolator 1 connectotr for the 1/8 jack and 1 1/8 to rca connected it in between the y cable and laptop and still got the noise coming out when i plug the laptop in. Any other ideas.

and thanks again for the inspiration to not give this up cause i hate being beat by something humans made

reground your headunit... most good car audio places will not use your stock ground wire to ground a high end hu. find some metal, sand it down and run a new ground. may or may not fix the problem, but easy enough to give it a shot. if you dont have a multimeter, i suggest you invest in one... you will find yourself using it a lot. gl.

Head unit has been regrounded and still same Annoying fly buzzing in the speaker
