using a 1 ohm amp to power 2 ohm subs?!

would this be possible to do. the amp is 4000 watt mono and is 1 ohm mono. would using 2 ohm subs bring down the amp to somewhere around 2000 watts? is there a possibility to run say... six subwoofers that are all 2 ohm and rated around 2000 watts by one amp? if not, how many amps should i consider getting if possible.

You could run 50 subs off that amplifier if you like by mixing parallel and series connection intermixed.

if you wanted to run 6 speakers off of that amp, where each is 2 ohms, then do the following:

Pair up subs so you have 2 groups of 3 speakers. Wire each group in parallel, plus to plus, minus to minus. Now you have 2 "speakers", each with a .6667 impedence. Now wire those in series and you have a 1.2 ohm load. Divide total power by six and each speaker is "seeing" about that much power.

If you need more power then run 3 amps.

My question for you is if this is a carpc forum, why does your first post have nothing to do with carpcs at all? There are hundreds of car audio forums out there that cater to this type of intellect.

my question is why do you need 6-2000W subs? Who in the back seat are you trying to kill?

***edit***wrote out this whole thing and will goes and i think edits his with the same calcuation...unless i totally missed that huge paragraph on calcuations

anyways, good luck with your car pc.

    bad idea

its a bad idea to put speakers in paralell. this will cause decreased bandwidth and give you waveform distortion on either end of the spectrum they were designed. But if you do, it will work and will not damage the amp as long as you have the impedence matched correctly. The reason why you get distortion when "piggy backing speakers" is due to the stray capacitances in the voice coils. Adding so speakers the one output with change the Q of the circuit that the amp is supposed to work with. This in turn gives you poorer audio quality than you would have had with a correct speaker. To correct this problem you can get a proper cross over which will allow you the 2 ohm speaker or two 2 ohm speakers, this will match the amp to the load.

    Series or paralel?

and if you look at the capacitance, the alterations to frequency response fall outside of the woofers designated bandwidth anyways.
