You get what you pay for, it is as simple as that. You pay $100-150 for 5 speakers and a subwoofer and you're gonna get a subwoofer worth $20, an amp/processor worth $30, and 5 speakers worth $10 each. Even the term "subwoofer" is relative. If your woofer is only 2", then sure a 6" driver could be considered a "sub" "woofer". However, the overall system can only play down to 60Hz (40Hz at best). That is fine when the bass is less than 2 feet from your ears and the speakers are directly in front of you only inches from your face.Originally Posted by breaker021
A set of 6.5" car audio speakers and an amplifier for the same price can play down to 50Hz. A Crutchfield.com you can get a 2-ch amp for as low as $80 and a pair of speakers for as low as $50. Compare those speakers with the subwoofer in the PC set. I'll bet you find the car speaker has a more rigid cone, a more durable surround (not made of paper), and a larger magnet/motor structure.

if you are saying a similarly priced computer and car system would sound the same, you are wrong. really good computer speakers are cheap compared to their car counterparts for two reasons:Originally Posted by chuyler1
1. computer speakers come preloaded in enclosures. a lot of the time people underestimate the importance of a good enclosure, and logitech can design a great enclosure and make use of it in a hundred thousand speaker systems, the relative cost is small. a $30 speaker/amp combo in an enclosure that cost $10 to build (but was engineered by logitech at a cost in the tens of thousands to work perfectly with the speaker) will sound a hell of a lot better than a $40 speaker in a door, or even a homemade box.
2. cars have ****ty acoustics, compared to a room that a computer would be in.
carputer - done.
