Come back to this post about a year later, and see what you think.
The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten
well, we probably are right about not using pc-speakers.... But that doesn't have to be the reason he hasn't started the project yet.... I have stuff laying around for over a year and still haven't started to put it in my ride.... just because TIME's an issue...
anywho..... is this discussion still going on? DAMN.... pc-speakers won't work, periot!

Awwww why not dredge it up? Lest we be barraged by some other squid that wants to try this. Heck it should be made a sticky!
This subject is soooo 30 years ago. But back then the quality of car audio stuff was for crap. Remember 8 track car players?
Man at the time we were sticking all sorts of home gear in cars trying to get better sound. Going through all the nightmares of figuring out how to make it work. We really envied the VAN guys that had all that room to stick home speakers in there. Remember the Custom Van craze of the 70's and early 80's?
Finally the aftermarket car audio industry started catching on, and now the car manufacturers are catching up with quite decent OEM audio and car computing products.
The need to even go the home brewed car PC route is becoming less and less attractive.
Soon the hot thing will be hacking the OEM car pc installations to utilize the already installed LCD screens and controls so as not to have to go through the fabrication and integration nightmares.
I still have not figured out why the aftermarket hasw not embraced digital out from the head unit to the amps solution. Heck SPDIF digital out from players and amps has been mainstream in home audio for a while now. It eliminates most of the noise prone RCA wiring, and leaves analog only to the speakers.
Anyway heck if you dont care how your stuff sounds, yea you can just toss any old amplified computer speaker in your car. Better yet just do it like we did back in the 70's. Go to wallmart and get a boom box that runs on batteries and toss it into the passenger seat hook up your Ipod to the line in jacks and Boom away.

digital doesn't have the quality that analog does. The sound is much more processed and not as lifelike as it is in analog. Thus the reason in most very high end home and car set-ups, you won't find optical connections, or digital for that matter.

Um too processed? So you still like the SQ of analog cassette tapes? Vinyl records? Just what form of recording do you think exists on a cd? Sorry but the second you pop a CD into a player you have gone digital. Might as well carry it all the way to the amps.
Or you can always rent a limo hire the rolling stones and have em play your music live![]()

Optical connections are not known for recreating absolutely accurate sound. The cables cause reflections which creates issues. Even up until recently I believed that optical was the way to go, but upon further research, it's not ideal and is the reason that most high end set-ups aren't using it any more.
I was not referring to the media, but rather the transmission.

Time to get better transmission then!
Personally I think it's crap they fall back to analog just because a cheap technology doesn't suffice.
They should get some error-correction in (2-way communication) and digital transmission can be bit-perfect from one end to another.
A good example is a USB-DAC. USB is far more reliable than spdif, and it works great.
Also, in very high-end setups, the errors from optical outweigh the problems with analog, because a lot of money goes to overcoming the problems of analog. For any budget slightly lower than that, optical will be the better option...
