Keep in mind the money you need to spend on an inverter to get enough power to the Z5500s.

I once did a PC speaker installation. Sounded like crap(I listen to lots of Hip Hop AKA Rap music). I also did the home tower speaker setup with a car amp. Sounded good as hell, just like a sub enclosure(at the time I had a hatchback). Unfortunately, due to the extreme temperature changes in the car(heat and cold), they did not last long at all. Tried the same setup in a trunk setup. The bass just wasn't there at all, thus it sounded like crap. Then bought a cheap $40 head unit, cheap single 10" sub enclosure, and a cheap 400watt amp(bridged). Sounded good as hell when inside the car(windows up or down). Replaced all the factory speakers with quality pioneer speakers, and suddenly my system sounded like it was top of the line.

Basically from my experience, the better the speakers, the better the sound(even with cheap amps and headunits). PC speakers were the worst of my experiments, but they would blow most systems out the water in the house, but couldn't compete with even an old school 8 track deck in the car.

Lesson learned. I'd rather buy the cheapest car headunit, amp, and sub enclosure rather than the most expensive amplified PC out there any day, cause I now have hands on experience when it come to the overall sound quality and output.

Out of curiosity, to all the PC speaker naysayers that have actually experimented or seen them in use, what brand/model and price range were they?

I forget the model, but the set I tried was a Logitech 1000w 5.1 set that was $300. Sounds wonderful in my house, but it sounded like crap when it was in my car. Not to mention I never got rid of the inverter noise, but that was the least of my quality issues.

What an old classic thread! Did I miss something or did checksum never check back in on how they sounded? Or perhaps Darwinism / natural selection took him from us in a PC speaker related accident?

The funny part about people who insist it can be done; they are so worried about whether or not they could, fail to stop and realize whether or not they SHOULD!

Ha, I think this thread needs a fresh post.....
I found this on Ebay to replace the control pod of my Z5500 for home, and my other set I sold, so no in car Z5500's for me, sorry guys!

So, I bought two of them and will run optic from the mobo to this unit to disperse signals to separate amps for surround, and as well simulated surround.
Although, not using the Z5500 I guess I could have just ran RCA cables from mobo to trunk, but I think the digital doesn't pick up interference? I'm wondering if I'm just adding complexity now.

Anyway, the same seller has the AX Pro controller too which only has optical in.
