    Easy question

Hey guys, this is an easy question to those of you who are true audiophiles, but im just begining. What exactly does the 2.1 or 4.1 that everyone refers to mean? ive seen it all over the place, and i think it means how many channels, or speakers from one amp or unit of somekind? hopefully someone can clarify this for me so i can understand better. tia.

The 2 in 2.1 means two speakers, and the 1 means one sub. So 4.1 has 4 speakers and 1 sub. 5.1 has the same as 4.1 except it also includes a center channel.

5.1 and above is commonly referred to as surround sound (your home theatre probably has this)

at that point, this sound stage stuff can get a little complicated, 8.1 is possible...

    any other questions?

it's rarely refered to as a six channel. 6channels are 6.0

Don't confuse .1 for one sub either. It simply refers to one subwoofer OUTPUT....you can hook up as many subs as you want so long as you arer not overloading the amplifier.

i was gonna say - 6 channel isn't so much surround sound, as 5.1 is, 6 - channel more or less tells me just that 6 channels....not set up for surround decoding...if that makes any sense
