    Any suggestions

Ok, I'm trying to get some feedback regarding my sound options. I currently have the Aopen Pandora, USB external sound card, 680 watt MTX 4 channel amp and factory speakers/headunit. I don't have anything installed just yet but after reading countless threads on the subject I'm more confused than ever. I've read some post where others are advising to forget the factory radio and invest in an amp while others are saying they are just using aftermarket head units with an aux input connected to their sound cards. My question is do I need both the after market headunit and the amp if I want 5.1 surround sound when watching DVD's? or can I just get away with an after market HU with Aux in? I'm not looking to compete in shows or loosing anyone's fillings; I just want a decent sounding system for the people inside the car.

    Any suggestions

ask yourself this first of all

you have a 4-channel amp...how are you going to get 5.1 from that?

There are many ways to get phantom 5.1, but it all boils down to asking yourself what do you want in your car and what you will use more often. If you listen to a lot of radio and need a head unit...then there is your answer. If you don't have room for a head unit and can find a better way to control the pc volume...than there is your answer as well....it's all up to you.

I don't really listen to a lot of radio and I'm considering adding the Sirius mod that allows control via the pc. I'm just thinking of the cost that are involved going either way since I'm not changing my speakers... yet. I already have the amp but since I'm not using any subs can I forget the amp and just use a headunit with an aux input? It doesn't have to be earth shaking but I do want it to sound decent

Hmm...if your head unit has an aux-in and there is room for both that and the carputer, than i say you should go with that method. It will be easier to get the sound to your speakers and you can still have the amp. The headunit would be used to control volume which is a plus.

If you don't need the head unit, you can get a sound card (either internal or external) and just run rca's from your sound card to your amplifier. You would then get a grifith powermate (or similar usb device) to act as your volume nob so that you can access the volume much quicker and easier.

what 3on said - only if you run no hu - you will need something to boost the line level voltage from the computer to the amplifiers (an eq or the like)

well...you don't need a line level booster, but you will get degraded sound if you don't have one. When I was using a sound card, i didn't have a line driver, i just had my gains turned up so that the speakers would be louder. This introduced background noise through the speakers and it didn't sound that great. I then added a line driver and i was able to turn the gains back down.....so you don't need one, but it definitely helps. My advice is to go through with the install without it and see how you like it before buying it. You might be satisfied with the sound and decide against needing one.

Question: If I decide to go with the headunit and connect the soundcard to the headunit via aux in what happens if I'm listening to the radio and running Iguidance? Will the music mute when the verbal directions kick in?
