Yeah, that's true...but i've gotten used to it (the headunit feel...and subwoofer controls)..lol.Originally Posted by Red GTi VR6
I specifically didn't want to use the SPDIF from the board because it was going to require a converter, not a huge fan of that, just one more conversion in the line-up. I'm sure it will work fine though.
as for the volume knob...can still controll that via a wired knob...some of the ones like people are using here via USB or otherwise.

I'm talking with a friend of mine concerning the differences (advantages/disadvantages) of using the pro audio software and a high end sound card over using the alpine piece.
is response was that using the software would ONLY be a better option if internal components were better on the computer/sound card than on the alpine. I.e Better opamps, DA converters and such.
this guy is in a band that's been signed by kick dog records out of houston, and he's a well known installer competing in the Expert class in USACi as well as IASCA.

I also am aware of the H701 and other digital options...but that brings another unit into the signal path and into my car. I'm sure there are sound cards available with the quality of sound comparable to Alpine's processor. The trick is to get that sound directly to the amps without any equipment in between. I could always use an analog crossover but then I wouldn't be able to adjust things from the driver's seat.
Let me paint a picture...and I think Red might be looking for the same thing. A carputer with all your music on the hard drive, a 30-band eq, a fully customizable crossover with 6+ channels of output, RTA software, and a high end microphone input for tweeking your system. You could tune your system at a stop light or in rush hour traffic!
But isn't a sound card another device along the signal path...same thing...the H701 is my soundcard....and it actually improves the weak .2V signal coming out of the computer, giving you 4V...wouldn't that be better?

chuyler and I are talking about a high end studio sound card
leme see if I can lay it out where it makes sense...which I'm not very good at.
We'll just use my set-up as an example:
computer -> PCMCIA sound card -> 701 -> amps - > speakers
now we are looking for:
computer -> sound card -> amps
this sound card will have to have the following:

multi-channel RCA outputs (a PAIR of ourputs per channel: R/L)
higher voltage coming from the sound card than most sound cards (2v AT LEAST - honnestly 4v would be the lowest I think I'd consider going)
enough room between the RCA outs to put a NICE RCA end in there
high quality DA converters
high quality opamps
things along these lines
yes, the alpine does all of these things, and the only way I'd consider making the change is if I found a card that would actually be higher quality (maybe even same quality) as the alpine.
IF I found that, I'd probably go that route because it would be much more streamlined.

i actually did a lot of research trying to find a 4v output...looking into the a/v editing cards and breakout boxes (used in protools setups) and didnt find anything that beat the alpine units (trust me... integrating the controller into my dash is costing me a lot of $$ and time, so if there were other easier options i would have gone with that and kept my old setup that i was happy with)
I do have access to a breakout box that is used with our avid and protools system that my side company has but if memory serves me right the voltage isn't that impressive.
not trying to be negative here, i'd like the same thing as you guys. has anyone heard anything new on the onkyo sound cards?

I personally haven't found anything on the onkyo, but it's worth looking into!
