hey red, i think some of the firewire m-audio cards have balanced 4 volt 1/4" trs (tip/ring/sleeve )outs. you could make a custom cable to make an unbalanced rca. each trs out is it's own channel (unlike the mini plugs on most soundcards that cary two chans)
SO I'M AN IDIOT
That m-audio card i purchased only has 2 sets of balanced outputs. Looks like i'll be going with the e-emu 1820 card
let us know about the e-emu card!
I learned something when talking to m-audio the other day. I have an m-audio mobilepre usb external soundcard that has two 1/4" output jacks. I assumed these were balanced jacks, but they told me they were not. I'm definitely not an expert on this stuff, but it was still surprising to me. I guess the morale is don't assume that all 1/4" outputs are balanced.

well...i'm doing a lot more research again. i have to make sure that i can get a software x-over as well, since my amps dont have x-overs. UGH.... i have a ton of emails going out. I may just end up keeping the alpine and going unbalanced into the amps (i would hack up the face plate so i could hide everthing but the volume knob)....id rather avoid this though.
anyways, quack, i may have an m-audio soundcard for sale...it has balanced 4 volt outs :-) you can make a cable to convert it to unbalanced 4 volts for your amps if needed.
if you hack up that alpine deffinately let me know!
well emu just emailed me back and they dont have x-over ability in there soundcards! ARGH!!!! there is another problem with going 'pxa'-less.
man - if we had the means and the money, we should design a high quality all in one solution to this problem!
well...i can't help with the means...probablly not much with the money (relatively) BUT i can provide the problem....wait...
