No offence to anyone, but I think it seriously depends on the type of sub as well. Most of the REAL (Kenwood, Sony, etc need not apply) SPL-type subs have magnets/magnet arrays like you've never seen, and might do some damage even though their enclosures.

Then again, with subs like that I'd be less suprised if they didn't just vibrate the car PC to pieces.

//Edit: Forgot to add the potentially offensive part.

I was thinking more Digital Designs 9XXX, Resonant Engineering XXX, Focal Utopia Berillyiums or Adire Tumults.

yes, those are great subs, but I can't afford them. Unless u wanna give me a pair of RE's, the se will be fine. and I think the adire are ugly.
and I can't complain about the alpines when i got 2 for the price of 1, but my next setup will be better when I save up more money.

Okay...i'm going to crack open my text book when i get home, but heres't eh thing: you stated vicintiy. If you're going to do something crazy like put the computer next to or on the sub, then you're asking for trouble. If you're mounting it on teh side of the trink and the Sub somwhere in the middle, then you should be fie. Like most things in nature, magnetic field strenght probably a function of distance squared..actually, i beleive it is (checked, it is...B is substituted for V x big mess that's divided by raduis squared). 2-3ft and you should be fine,

HOWEVER, shock tested, the HDD and computer equipment will survive being near the sub, but livfe cycle of moving parts will be greatly dimnished, esp if you like bassy music. The reason why they say use a laptop HDD is probably because the fast ones spin a 5400 RPMs, slower than a fast 3.5, and its less likely to get damaged or skip during a bass montage.

ANd don't give HDDs too much credit just yet. I'm just got off a comptuer that had an HDD where a 2 year old was turning it on until the windwos screen came up and then shut it off...for hours. 13 hours of diagnostics later, i came to the conclusion that they need a new hardddrive. What can i say, I'm a stubborn and tenacious bastard

I suppose SQL might be more appropriate. They're probably one of the cleanest subs you can get, but I doubt they suffer from being too quiet. :P
