Amplifier

I was hoping I could receive a suggestion from someone a little more knowledgeable in the Car Audio field. I personally don't know much about Car Audio soooo.... Here is what I have. I have 4 Pioneer TS-A1671R 3-Way Speakers. 220 Watt Max Output. I also Was sold an Amp kit that states it supports up to 500 Watts. I need a recommendation on an amplifier. Something that will help to make my speakers sound great, but that will work with my current amp kit. Can you successfully run a 1000W amp off of a 500Watt amp kit?

The amp kits guage may not be able to handle the load. I have used Walmarts 1500 watt kit to power 2000w+ though. Get an amp that has an RMS rating of at most half your speakers peak output.

First of all, arent those 6.5" speakers you're talking about. Are those going to be the only speakers you are amplifing or something else all together. Second of all the most acurate measurement of wattage is the rms wattage which if i remember correctly those speakers have a RMS wattage of like 50-70 watts RMS. And the wattage that power wires are rated at are also in the RMS wattage.
Finally, why would you even attempt running more watts through a power wire than it can handle. Its like trying to put a 12" cock into a 3" condom, in the long run you're bound to get the burn.

All those ratings are peak ratings, which only matter if you're in an amplifier company's marketing department. Does the amp kit have 4, 8, or 10 guage power/ground wire? How far will the amp be from the battery?

The amp will be under the passenger seat (battery is on driver side). My car supporst 6.5 speakers all the way around. That is why I have four. I do not plan on installing any subs (atleast not yet). I'm not trying to put an 1000W amp in on a 500W amp kit. I'm just curious. I trying to figure out what the best amp for my setup would be, thats all. Thanks for the help. Any further suggestions?

Also, the box just says 220W Max and 35W Nominal. I don't see anything about RMS

(So Would something like the Kenwood KAC-7202 do well? It's max RMS Output is 150/w Channel)

here's a tip:

nominal = RMS

get an amp that is ~50wRMS, and call it a day


and RTFM, do some research man, seriously

I recommend the JL 300/4....excellent amp, you'll like it.

It will give you 75 watts to each speaker.

You should be fine with that amp kit as the amp you need won't be over 400 watts....if it is, then it's going to cost more than the jl and sound worse...so get the jl.

Stay away from the Kac-7202, it is a sub amp. Get a small 4 channel amp and be done with it. You don't need a 1000w amp on 4 6.5" speakers.

Those guys are right--150 watts is way too much for 6.5s. JL stuff is awesome, but pricey. If you're on a budget you could get one of the Alpine 4 channels, they're pretty small, not too expensive and work well. Stay away from anything that advertises on the box in huge pink letters that it puts out 1.21 gigawatts and you should be fine.

Some other companies that make quality 4 channel amps that come to mind are:

Great: PPI, DLS, Arc, Zapco, USamps, Audisson

Good: JL, Soundstream, ED Nine.4, Kicker, Phoenix Gold, Alpine



....and stay away from audiobahn...if you see their logo, run fast.
