    Finding Radio Mute

    Hi. Can anyone plese tell me the best way to find the radio mute connection on the back of a factory fitted stereo. I am fitting a car phone kit. Is it ok to use a 12v test probe?

    Sure, you can use a 12v test probe, but I don't think you'll find anything. Fastest way is to find wiring diagrams for your car. They'll usually well detailed in there.

    What kind of car do you have? I might be able to find you a wiring diagram, or even better, the answer to your question.

    The car is a mk5 VW Golf. To remove the stereo i had to remove alot of the fascia around the stereo. I unplugged the airbag warning light and the hazard button. When I put everything back together there was an airbag fault on the instrument display on starting the engine.
    I didn't tamper with any airbags because there was no need. Any help would be great in eliminating this fault.
    Also how do full time phone kit installers find the wiring for each car? Is there a program you can buy?

    I haven't been able to find a wiring diagram for your golf. I would suggest going to a dealership. I don't think they would have a problem telling you what color that one wire is, they might even give you the whole diagram if you're nice.

    I don't know about the airbag light, but my father is an import technician and I will ask him.

    on the airbag fault.

    The VWs are REALLY pickey about that damn thing.

    For instance, in my car, when we unplugged the seats (since I have side airbags in the seats) and plugged them back in, it set the airbag warning light off. In order for me to reset it, I risk blowing the air bags...which isn't cheap.

    So I've left it.

    As for the wiring, there's a network out there for shops. Many times, the alarm companies produce these wiring diagrams so that installers will be able to do their work more efficiently.

    I believe one of those networks is tech-net.

    Either go to your dealership and be nice to the counter guy or a mechanic, or go to a local stereo shop and be nice to an installer.

    You should be able to get the information you need.

    To turn off the airbag light on a VW it requires a Scan Tool. The VW dealership will be able to turn the light off (that is, erase the airbag error code), but they will charge you an arm and a leg to do it.

    Your best bet is to either find a local mechanic or buy your own scan tool. Either of these routes will likely be much cheaper than getting it done at the dealership.

    For volkswagens , the VAG-COM system is very popular as it allows you to connect your car to a computer to access a lot of Volkswagen specific things. You can get the VAG-COM interface cables and software from www.ross-tech.com. You can also find the cables on eBay for around $30 or so.

    There is no trick to easily turn off the light. Once the error code has been set, it must be erased by a computer or a scan tool. The airbags are disabled while the light is on so, while there is no risk of the airbags exploding unexpectedly, it is important to fix this for safety reasons.

    that's exactly what I was talking about

    it's a known issue, and to reset the light you risk blowing the air bag with the Vag-com.

    On my car, with the seat setting off the light. Resetting it won't do a damn thing to actually solve the problem, it will come right back on unless the issue with the seat is fixed, same in this guys case.

    I find it rather difficult to believe that resetting the airbag code could possibly result in an airbag explosion. I can understand that if hardware that is known to be faulty in the system is just left there and the code is erased that could cause a malfunction, but certainly not an explosion. However, in this situation we can be fairly sure it is not the case and the hardware is not the problem. The SRS warning lamp is often triggered for relatively minor reasons that do not require any maintenance on the system. I found a bit of information specifically on German SRS electronics.

    Any number of harmless acts can trigger the SRS lamp:
    * Driving the car through a large puddle, or being exposed to lots of rain
    * Swapping steering wheels
    * Removing the gauge cluster to replace light bulbs
    * Aggressive and/or track driving
    * Accidentally disconnecting an SRS component while hooking up electrical accessories, like an alarm or stereo
    * Pulling a fuse for the SRS system while performing electrical troubleshooting.
    * Bad seatbelt sensor in the belt receptacle (common failure)
