    Looking for Special 10" Sub

Hey guys, does anyone know of a good quality 10" sub that can mount freeair (low fs) and handle 600watts?

I'd like to mount one up front in my passenger footwell. I might be able to fit a 12". I mainly need something with a stiff suspension that can handle not being in an enclosure.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

no matter what it will be in an enclosure, meaning the rear wave of the sub must be sealed off from the front wave or it will cancel itself out... even an infinate baffle install uses the trunk as an enclosure...

free air & infinate baffle setups are more for when the enclosure is larger than what could provide an adiquate suspension... in effect the enclosure is too large to provide suspension, like a whole trunk for a pair of 10's or something, but I doubt you could have this problem with 10's in your kicks....

instead you'll have the oposite problem... an enclosure that is too small... reconsider your use of 10's... if the enclosure is too small you'll wind up with very little bass generated by a too tight suspension... the best way to put 10's up front will be to use the doors as an enclosure unless you can provide a large enough enclosure in the center console?

It will be a "true" infinate baffle. Not like a trunk install. The rear wave will be outside of the car, the front wave inside. So there will be no "acoustic suspension" of any kind. I used to read about aperiodic membranes that were used to manipulate the speakers response. It was just a resistive layer like fiberglass mat that was adjusted by the thickness to get the desired response. I don't remember that much about them, so I just wanted to go free air.

I asked here because it is a pretty rare and unique way to mount it so I don't think manufacturers are really making subs like this anymore.

can I ask how you're going to set that up?

how are you going to protect the back side of the sub from the elements, etc?

hmmmm, ok , that's a true infinate baffle, until you open a window that is..... how are you planning on sealing it off from the eliments? what about the fact that when the car is closed up & playing, you will have a 10" sub playing to the outside of the car?

even if you did try to pull this off(I think it's a bad idea) you won't be able to run 600 watts to a sub installed like this.... even a sub that does work in infinate baffle will handle much less power in that configuration... 150-175 is usually max.... anything past that & it will drive the sub past it's excursion limits.... you'd probably get better results with a properly installed smaller sub...

edit: you'll DEFINATLEY get better results with a proper install of a driver that fits...

Man, you 2 are up early.
I'm thinking along the line of Earl Zausmer's old BMW. I got to listen to it a while back and it was awesome. Hey, he got 13's up front. You could really feel them.

I'm basically stealing some ideas from him. I will be using a lot of nice wood over a square tube frame in the back to house the amps and electronics. I'll have two 12's in a sealed twin cylinder enclosure in the back for the real lows. The 10 up front will be for the 40-80Hz stuff. Or I might turn the rear 12's off altogether and run the 10 all the way down for when I'm going for extreme sound quality. Most of the time I'll have all 3 subs working together.

I ran a similar setup in my previous car with a sealed 8" up front. It was great. This new car (Trans Am) is smaller so I didn't use the sub up front, but now I'm thinking of using some of the passenger footwell area to house it. I can mount my 8" in a sealed enclosure or maybe a 12" infinate baffle style. Right now I want to see if there are any drivers out there that will even work in that application. If I find one and it has good sound quality, I'll probably fabricate a box barely larger than the sub and then weld in a louvered panel along the firewall and cover it with an additional sheet metal cover to keep water out. It will be vented. I haven't looked under the car much to see if anything is in the way, but I think there is room for what I plan to do.

I'll be using a Rockford 225.2. It's 150x2 4ohm or 300x2 2 2ohm. I could run it 8ohm mono for 300 watts. I really don't think over powering it would be a problem. Would it be a problem having the outside wave exposed? I don't know. Do you think the bass would drop if the windows are down? I don't know.

I don't know any of the newer rules, but in the past with iasca it was against the rules to have any enclosure ported to outside the vehicle....

what about the fact that when you open your window you will get canceling?

    I don't compete.
How much cancelling do you think there will be?
