I'll try this at the weekend and let you know how I get on. Is it possible the amp is actually faulty though?
    Thanks for all your help.

Perfect! and even a little overkill. But thats what we want.

Geez...that 4 gauge wire is about $6 per foot, if my conversion is correct! Things really are expensive in England...

    Tell me about it!
I spent nearly £50 ($90) on wires when I set the system up originally!

Is it possible the amp is faulty/crappy though, it's not the best (it's a Maystar, never heard of them) and I am tempted to replace it anyway. I'll do as we've decided tomorrow and see what happens but if I still get noise I'm buying a new amp!

    Well I did as planned.
I ran the carnetix unit and head unit to the battery negative and the active crossover and two amps through a distribution block to a solid ground on the floor pan.

It still makes the same amount of noise
Incidentally, when I mute the head unit the noise is quite a bit less but still bad! What the hell is that about!

Help me, i'm on the verge of buying a new amp but I want to know if there is anything else I need to try first so I don't waste my money.

Well I have gone and done it.
    I ordered this:
    http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/pro...s_id/2608.html
£65 down from £110 so it's a good price for a good amount of power. I just hope it cures my problem otherwise I'm screwed!

Actually, that's a horrible amp. The problem's more than likely still going to be there.

Stay away from any car audio that says Sony or Xplod on it. It's all garbage. Everything they made after their Mobile ES line is utter crap except for their tray-loading CD players.
