Frequency response question: Alpine, Focal and JL Audio

    Hi,

I've been lurking on the MP3Car forums for a while and have just registered. I'm planning to install a CarPC, and while I'm knowledgable in the computing side of things, I'm new to car audio. The CarPC will be used primarily for music, ideally using FLAC or some other lossless codec, so I'm initially looking for a set of 6.5" component speakers, and a 2 channel amp to power them. I don't have a huge amount of money, but I don't want to buy cheap crap either.

I knew that Alpine had a fairly good reputation, so I initially had my eye on a set of SPR-176A components. Then, I heard people raving about Focal and JL Audio, so I've been looking at their component speakers too.

The question I have is about frequency response. I searched this forum, but couldn't seem to find anything relevant. I've earmarked three sets of speakers, from the three manufacturers, and the frequency response differs as follows:

    Alpine SPR-176A: 35Hz-35kHz
    Focal 165V1: 60Hz-28kHz
    JL Audio TR650-CSi: 59 Hz - 22 kHz

So, from these three component sets, the cheapest ones - i.e. the Alpines - have the widest frequency response range. I know that humans only hear up to about 20kHz, but even so, the bass response also seems to lack on the more expensive Focal and JL speakers. I also know that specs don't necessarily translate into sound quality, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me why there is this difference, and how it would affect the sound quality of these speakers in real world performance?

I'm looking for something with decent bass, but not necessarily window-rattling bass. I may also install a sub somewhere along the line, but I wouldn't want components that were somewhat lacking in bass in the mean time. Midrange and treble are also important to me. I'd heard that the Alpine speakers tend to have slightly harsh treble, and was wondering how the Focal and JL speakers would compare to them in this regard.

Thanks for any help you can give me and I hope this question isn't too n00bish

Personally I think those frequency responses are a load of crap. 35-35? I call BS. It might be able to reproduce a single frequency in a sweep, but I doubt it can handle all that at once. Pluse, if those are door speakers, you'd typically want to have your crossovers around 80-100Hz to keep the 'woofers' from damaging themselves.

Speakers, in my opinion, are something you have to hear and compare for yourself. I, personally, don't like Alpine speakers. They sound too 'tinny' to me, and I prefer Polk. However, I know plenty of people who don't like my Polks, but prefer Alpines.

Not a great scientific answer, or perhaps not even really relevant, but I threw my hat in!

Frequency response has a lot to do with cone weight. The heavier the cone the lower the frequency that can be obtained. On the flip side of that though, is that the heavier the cone, the less quickly the speaker can respond.

This means that the Alpine should have some very strong midbass, but might be lacking on the midrange response. While the Focal should have a good deal of midrange while lacking on the midbass.

The size of the magnet has a lot to do with the response as well. The larger the magnet structure the stronger the magnetic field (with the exception of neodymium magnets) thus the more control over the motor structure meaning more control over the spider and the cone.

Metailc domed tweeters generally have a harsher sound than a cloth cone. Basic reasoning for the difference in sound you see there.

Hopefully this will help in making your decisions.

If you want bass, install a subwoofer. There's no way around it. All three of those component sets are good, just pick the one that sounds best to you.

I would like to listen to all three sets in person, but my local car audio place only has the Alpine components, out of those three, hence me asking on here. I will go and listen to the Alpine ones at least.

Depending on the rest of your system, I'm quite partial to the Focals, but I'm a bit biased....lol

The Focal speakers are rated at 70W, so I would need a more powerful amp than I was planning. I don't have that kind of money right now. I should save, and delay my plans a little more :/

Now I have to decide on an amp too, haha. Gah, I wish I weren't so indecisive.

    what amp do you have?

read this post I made regarding basic questions, I specifically touch on the ratings too: FAQ: What speakers/amps should I go with?
